Thiruvizha Sree Mahadevar Temple : Magical Cure For Various Diseases In This Famous Temple

This article is about Thiruvizha Sree Mahadevar  Temple located on the Ernakulaum – Cherthala road, Kerala. This is a very ancient temple that cures insanity, skin diseases and other ill-effects of kai-visham or food that is swallowed with black magic on it.

History:

Once, there used to be an insane man who roamed around the temple. The devotees were afraid of him. One night lord Shiva appeared in the dream of a person belonging to a Nair clan and asked to do the following: The mad person had to be tied overnight in the temple and the next day a new plant will sprout out in the temple. The juice of the plant has to be mixed with cow’s milk and to be given to the mad person. And this was done as per the dream. The mad person began to vomit and the undigested food i.e. the kai-visham was thrown up and he became alright. Thus the tradition is followed.

Who should visit the temple?

People with mental illness, insanity, serious illness in the limbs(dropsy),people affected by kai-visham,alchemy, skin diseases like edema, leprosy and who wish to invigorate his body and soul. The prasadam given in the temple cures all the above mentioned illnesses.

How does the prasadam work?

The person with illness and his/her aide are to stay in the temple the previous night. The temple provides accommodation. The devotees have to attend the deeparadhana and kuruthi pooja that evening. After this the devotees are provided with dinner in the temple. The next day the devotees are to be present at the temple at 5.00 a.m. and stay empty stomach till around 8.30 or 9.00 a.m. without drinking water and the holy water or theertham provided in the temple. The temple officials will give the prasadam or the holy milk which is the medicine for the problems. After drinking the milk the people have to move around the premises of the temple in a circular manner. As the people do the rounds they begin to throw up in the sands of the temple. Any undigested food that is present in the stomach due to black magic is brought out through this process. And any other impurities in the stomach are also brought out. The temple priests do give warm water to drink. The rounds should be continued to detoxify the body. A maximum of five to six rounds will suffice.

Guidelines to be followed:

  • People who wish to take the prasadam are strictly advised to abstain from sensual pleasures like alcohol, sex and non-vegetarian foods for a week. They are advised to keep their body and soul pure and pray to the presiding deity shri Mahadeva ( Lord Shiva) for a better cure.
  • The person taking the prasadam has to be accompanied by someone; it could be their friends or relatives.
