When Lord Ram wanted to get rid of the sins he atoned after killing Ravana, he worshipped Lord Shiva here. When Hanuman was on the search for a Linga for Lord Ram to worship from Kailash to Sri Lanka, Lady Sita made a Linga for her husband from sand. It was getting late and Lord Ram worshipped this Linga, and this deity is named Ramanathar. When Hanuman was disappointed that his Linga was not used, Lord Ram named it Kasi Viswanathar. So, devotees worship Kasi VIswanathar before worshipping Ramanathar.
