Woraiyur is a historical town which served as the capital of the great Chola empire. Woraiyur Vekkali Amman is a world famous temple located as the center of attraction of the Woraiyur town and serves a major pilgrimage centre of Trichy city, loacted at about 7 kilometers from the city.

• Chola kings Pugazh Chola Nayanar and Gochenkan Chola were born in Woraiyur, the latter built this shrine to the goddess Shakti.

• Goddess Vekkali Amman holds trident, Udukai, the rope pasam and Atchaya paathiram on her four hands.
• There is no tower on this temple as Goddess Shakti is on the plain ground.
• Normally in most Shakti temples, the Goddess is seen with Shakti's right leg on the demon and left leg bent, while in Vekkali Amman Temple it is vice-versa in this temple, which is very rare.
