SRI SOWMYA NARAYANA PERUMAL TEMPLE

This magnificent is one among the 108 DIVYADESAS. It is located in Thirukostiur, 25 kms from sivaganga,10 kms from thiruppathur and 30 kms from karaikudi.This temple is named after the incident of killing Asuran who gave lots of problems to Kadambha maharishi and devas.Where,lord sowmya narayana killed the Asuran named 'HIRANYAN' by taking NARASIMHA avathaar.


This place is also known for SRI RAMANUJAR and his guru SELVA NAMBI who preached 'AKSHTASHARA MANTRAM'.The divine mantra is "OOM NAMO NARAYANA".

• MOOLAVAR AND THAYAAR:  The moolavar af the temple is  LORD SRI URAGA MELLANAYAAN and the thayaar is THIRUMAGAL NAACHIYAAR.

• UTSAVAR:  The utsavar of the temple is SRI SOWMYA NARAYANA PERUMAL and also named as "MADHAVAN".

• It is said to be southern badhrinath.
• This temple is first of the eight divyadesas.
• The temple was sung by Perialwar as 'Aayarpadi'.The first five songs of Nalayira divya prabandham tells about this temple.
• The vimana in this temple is known as 'Ashtanga vimanam'. Where,ashtanga means eight and the main speciality is that one can see the vimana from four sides.
• The shrines are found in three forms,namely Standing,Dancing and Sleeping.Standing is said as 'Nindran', Dancing as 'Aadinan' and Sleeping as 'Kidandhan'.
• The temple has two pushkarnis named as Thirupaarkadal which is present just opposite to the temple and another one is Devapushkarani.
