Koppudai Nayaki Amman - Overview & Greatness:
The temple of 'Koppudai Nayaki Amman' is situated in the main area of Karaikudi town.The elegant Koppudai Nayaki graces here as the presiding deity as well as processional deity.This is a special feature about the temple.Branches is the meaning for the word 'Koppu'.The presiding deity Koppudai Amman's idol is made of 'Panchaloga' - alloy of five metals.The Goddess graces with a firing crown on her head,holding trident,rope and skull in the hands.One hand is in Abhaya posture,promising boons to devotees.She stands on the 'Sri Chakra' which is said to be installed by Sri Adi Sankara Acharya.The Koppudai Nayaki gracing here faces east promising prosperity,education and courage.The guardian deity of the temple is Karuppannna Swami on his vehicle,horse.The Ugra devadhas are also present facing north.The Koppudai Nayaki Amman gracing on chakra is believed to have immense power.
Temple History:
The temple history says that,the place was full of tress called karai tree.It was planned to cure the place for human migration.In tamil,human migration is said as Kudiyetram.As the region of karai trees replaced to kudiyetram(human migration),the place is henceforth called as 'Karaikudi'.Another story is also there for this place. Kattamman and Koppudai amman were sisters.Kattamman had seven children while Koppudai amman had no child of her own.When Koppudai amman came to see her sister's children,Kattaman did not allowed her to see the children as Koppudai amman had no child.The Koppudai amman got angry and cursed the children to become stones.After this incident she reached Karaikudi.The Kattaman temple is situated in nearby place called 'Senjai Kadu'.
Festivals:
- In the month of April-May(Chithirai),Sevvai Tiruvizha is celebrated for ten days grandly.
- Also in the month of Chithirai,Poochoridhal Tiruvizha that is pouring flowers on Amman is celebrated grandly.
- The Car festival(Ratha) is also celebrated which drew a huge amount of crowd over here.The Ratha is constructed with Palm tree frames joined with a plant's stem called 'Thaiyilan Kodi'.
- Tamilnewyear,Navarathiri,Aadi tuesday,Margazhi thirupalli ezhuchi are the festivals observed here.
- Ordinary tuesday,friday and sunday drew a large crowd for the dharshan of Koppudai Nayaki Amman.
- Abishegam and Vasthras are offered to the mother.
