Sri Velangudi Karuppar temple | Sambrani Vasagar temple | Karuppasamy temple

Sri Velangudi Karuppar:

          Karuppasamy is the regional god of south tamilnadu.  Lord Karuppar is well known as protecting god (kaaval deivam). Lord Sri Velangudi Karuppar is the prominent form of Lord Karuppasamy. This temple is located just 7 kms from thiruppathur and it is considered as a historical site of chettinad region.
This temple is 1000 yeras old and devotees are from various region of south tamilnadu,kerala,malaysia and from cylon. Sri Velangudi Karuppar is believed to be a powerful god as he helped many devotees from trouble. An incident says that Velangudi karuppar protected his one of his devotee working in Myanmar was caught in the case of cheating and presented in the court.But he was not a cheater. Velangudi karuppar by his power and blessings saved him from the case and proved him not a cheater.Hence, Velangudi karuppar is believed to be a powerful god.  Sri Velangudi Karuppar is known in many names like Sambranivasagar, Karuppaiyah, Velangudiyan, Urangaa puliyan, Ezhu patti deivam and Sundakkadu Velangudi Karuppar.

History:

Urangaa Puliyan :

   SRI VELANGUDI KARUPPAR TEMPLE is 1000 years old. Here karuppasamy is seen as pure vegetarian.Lord Karrupar is a rural tamil god. Velangudi was a forest.  Sidhar called sadagopan was patronising Lord Shiva lived here.He was affected by a disease called leproasy. He meditated near the Aarthi tree in Velangudi daily and had his bath in the Sunai.  Days after, people of the village realised his leproasy slowly disappeared due to the water in the sunai. This Sunai is known as "Venkuttam Neekiya Sunai".Many believed he possess some magical power.One day the sidhar disappeared from the village.In the village people's dream he appeared and stated that he entered into Jeeva Samathi. Presently lives in Tamarind tree (Puliya Maram).Even now during the night, the leaves of puliya maram are open. So that Lord is called as "Urangaa Puliyan". He promised to protect the people of Velangudi and sub villages forever.


Sambranivasagar:

  Once a group of hunters passed by the Puliya maram rested at night after the bad results of hunting. In the dreams of hunters,Lord Velangudi Karuppar promised to guide them in the hunting. Next day, the hunters hunted many wild animals and were happy.Only then they realised that the tree possess some great power. They made a vow that if they go for hunting, the first and foremost thing they do is to offer pure Sambrani everytime.  So, Velangudiyan is called as "Sambranivasagar". 


Guardian deity of Velangudiyan:

 SRI VELANGUDI KARUPPAR has four guardian deities.Each deities represents a village.No idol worship is practiced here.
  • Sri Chinna Karuppar
  • Sri Sangili Karuppar
  • Sri Madurai Veeran
  • Sri Pechayi Amman

Festivals:

 Shivarathri is celebrated for three days.Where large community of people comes to celebrate the festival with their families.Even the tamil people who lives in foreign comes over here for Sivarathri particularly.People offers Bells and Aruvaal for their wish to come true which can be seen in the temple.Thai pongal and Thirukarthigai is also celebrated in the temple.

Buses are available from Thiruppathur to Ponnamaravathi.Stop name Velangudi.
Nearest Railwaystation Karaikudi.

  2. Sambrani is one of the main offering thing here.

    This temple don't have gate/door. It is open all the time. The villagers are highly devoted to this god. They wont wear foot ware while crossing temple.

    I have visited this temple few times. The God is living there as a form of snake.

    I have seen the snake once. It was King Kobra.

Get a chance and you visit Velangudi and offer a prayer with little of marikolunthu(Artemisia pallens) with sambirani and you can see the instant positive result which favoring you.
