PATTAMANGALAM DAKSHINAMOORTHY
This temple is one of the most famous temple in south for Lord Dakshnamoorthy. Lord Shiva is the moolavar, goddess Umadevi is graced as Navayadi kali. This temple is just 8 kms from Sivaganga and Thiruppathur.
History Of The Temple
The history of the temple goes like this, once Lord Shiva was telling stories to his sages Brungi and Nandi deva.At that time,Krutika maidens also wanted to know the art from lord Shiva.But, lord Shiva was hesitant.Goddess Umadevi recommended to preach the art to krutika maidens.Lord Shiva began to tell the "Ashtama siddhi " art while krutika maidens were not serious about it.Lord Shiva got angry and cursed them to become rock and also cursed Umadevi who recommended them..The krutika maidens fell in the foot of lord shiva and asked for relief.Lord Shiva told them that he would give relief after 1000 years from madurai.The time came for relief at pattamangai and now it is called as "Pattamangalam".
Temple History / Specialties
- Lord Shiva staged his third thiruvilayadal in this temple.
- This is the only temple in India where, Lord Dakshnamoorthy graces facing 'East'.In all the other shiva temples lord Dakshnamoorthy faces south blessing yoga and wisdom.
- The shrine of lord Shiva and goddess Navayadi nayagi appears inside the temple whereas, the shrine of Lord Dakshnamoorthy appears outside the temple seperately.
- The Banyan tree is the sthala vruksha and the sacred tank is Pottramarai.
- Lord Dakshnamoorthy graces here in Veerasana posture.
- Lord Shanmuganathan appears with five heads facing east with Valli and Deivanai in the inner space behind the shivalinga shrine.
- Devotees circumambulate the shrine of Lord Dakshnamoorthy and the banyan tree 108 times for happy life and blessed with good health,wishes,children and prosperity.
- The circumambulate goes like 3,5,7,9,11,15 and 1008 times.It is believed that each of the circumambulate gives wish,success,peace of mind,for a child, long life,prosperity and get girl of their choice respectively.

- Abhishegam and vasthras are offered to the god.
