Marudhamalai Murugan:
Lord Murugan, the god of mountains and mountainous regions says 'Thiru Murugatrupadai'.This magnificent and most beautiful temple is situated on the top hills of 'Marudhamalai' is set against the backdrop of hazy blue hills dotted with lots of shrubs and bushes that are of medicinal value which makes the breeze soft and smells like heaven to the devotees. It is such an eye treat to visit this temple in a greeny mountainous environment. The word Muruga connotes several meanings like beauty, sweetness, divine, youthfulness, etc., which are apt to this temple. Marudhamalai hills is dedicated to Lord Muruga. Marudhamalai is classified under 'Kundruthoradal', one of the six abodes of god. This beautiful temple is located northwest of Coimbatore,15kms from the main Coimbatore.
History & Overview:
According to Perur Purana, The demon Surapadma gave lots of problems to devas and gods. They approached Lord Shiva to get out of the problem. Lord Shiva promised them that Lord Muruga would come to rescue them from Surapadma. The gods should hasten to the hills of Marudhamalai and awaited for the advent of Lord Muruga to happen. This ancient temple belongs to the 12th century. References about the temple are found in the inscriptions in the Thirumuruganpoondi temple which is said to be 'Tevarapadal petra sthalam'.
The temple has eighteen steps to reach the main Sanctum Sanctorum. In the middle of the path steps, the shrine of Idumbha is found. The image of the deity is carved on a huge round rock in the posture of carrying Kavadi. Next, the beautiful mandapa is found with the hoof marks of a horse - Kudhirai Kulambu. It is believed that this mark would be caused by the horse of Lord Muruga as he marched against the demon Surapadma. The original deity of the temple is Lord Muruga with his consorts Valli and Deivanai. The presiding deity was installed by the devotees later. Sri Pateeswarar shrine and Sri Maragathambigai shrine is found in outer prakara. The Moolavar of the temple graces facing east with the rod on his right hand, left-hand hand placed on his hip, and a spear across. This idol resembles a close resemblance to the Palani deity. Marudhamalai Murugan gracing here is so beautiful and charm to look at and pray.
Specialties:
The sthala vruksha is Marudham tree and the theertham is Marutha theertham and also Skandha theertham.One of the unique features found here is the 'Paambatti Siddhar Cave'.Paambatti Siddhar is one of the notable Siddhar among the 18 Siddhas. He is associated with snake charming.The snake would dance for his tunes says the history. Near the foothills of the temple,idol of Lord Vinayagar is found which is known as 'Thaanthondri Vinayagar' meaning, appeared on its own and not installed by humans. Also said that the sages preferred this hill and came in search of Kayakalpam, divine medicine for salvation. The celestial cow, Kamadhenu had drunk from the springs under marudham tree as per Perur purana written by sage Kachiyappa. The main shrine of Lord Muruga is a unique symbol of Somaskanda Moorthy. The temple was sung by Arunagirinathar. Sage Kachiyappa says even thousands and thousands of love god does not match Lord Murugan of Marudhamalai in his magnificence. Lord Murugan of Marudhamalai is believed to remove both physical and mental afflictions as the hill is full of medicinal herbs.
Festivals & Puja:
The full moon day in the month of Chithirai(April - May) is celebrated. Vaigasi vigam in the month of Vaigasi(May - June) is observed. Visagam is the 16th star. Lord Muruga is also called Visagan. Aadi Kiruthigai in the month of July - August.Kiruthigai is the 3rd star. Ippasi shashti is celebrated grandly in the month of October to November. It is on the day six-faced Lord Muruga pierced demon Surapadma who imprisoned devas. Thiru Karthigai in the month of November to December and Thaipoosam in the month of January to February are celebrated which drew a huge crowd. Offering abhisheka, garlands, fruits carrying kavadi in shoulders up to the hills cures the disabilities, ill health, etc.Viswaroopa dharshan at 6am,Kalasandhi puja at 9am,Uchikkala puja at 12pm,Thirukappiduthal in day time at 1pm,Sayaratchai puja at 5pm and Ardha jama puja at 8.30pm are the puja timings.
