Sthala Purana/ History of The Temple: 

 Lord Brahma's daughters - Kamalai and Vimalai wished to marry Lord Shiva. Realizing that their desire is hard to be satisfied, Lord Brahma sent them to adore Lord Shiva on the banks of River Paalaru. God Shiva was satisfied with their atonement and showed up before them. He revealed to them that it was impractical for him to wed them as he was at that point wedded to Goddess Parvathi. He further encouraged them to wed Lord Vinayakar all things considered. Going to Lord Shiva's desires, they married Lord Vinayakar here when he returned in the wake of overcoming the evil spirit ruler Gajamukasuran.

Another history is related to the hour of Mahabharatha. Once Sage Bharadwaj had been reviled to appear as a bird. He visited numerous Shiva temples and prayed to the Lord to look for help from this revile. At last, he is said to have arrived at this spot, made a tank - Bharadwaja Theertham, adored Lord Shiva here, and got his revile freed. The name Thiru Valithayam comes from "Valiyan" – a dark bird(kari kuruvi) in Tamil and "Thiru" is a respectful prefix. Consequently, the Lord here is additionally commended as "Sri Valithaya Nathar".


According to the Sthala Puranam, there are eleven temples arranged around this shrine that embellish Thiruvlithayam like a festoon. This makes Thiruvalidayam favorable. These eleven temples are – Mylapore, Thiruvanmiyur, Thiruverkadu, Thiruvirkolam, Thiru Ilambayankottur, Thiruvooral, Thiruvalangadu, Thiruvenpakkam, Thirupachur, Thirumullaivoyal and Thiruvotriyur.

It is believed that Lords Indra, Mahavishnu, Ram, Hanuman, Lov, Kush, Manmadan, Sugreeva, Sage Agasthiar, Sage Bharadwaj, Yama, Vayu, Agni, Sun, and Moon have adored the God here. It is said that Planet Jupiter (Brahaspathi/Guru Bhagwan) revered Lord Shiva here and got diminished of his wrongdoings.


Other Deities in the Temple :

There are altars and symbols for Lord Varasidhi Vinayakar, Murugan, Somaskandar, Anjaneyar, Meenakshi Sundareswarar, Mahavishnu, Brahma, Suryan, Chandran, Dakshinamoorthy, Durgai, Navagraham, Bairavar, Nalvar, and Arunagirinathar in the Praharam. 


Significance:

Devotees accept that venerating the Lord here on full moon days will give them salvation. This temple is auspicious as it is a Guru Parihara Sthalam. As Lord Vinayakar is in his wedding structure in this temple, it is accepted by enthusiasts that venerating him here will facilitate their marriage propositions.

·       The Moolavar of Sri Tiruvalleswarar Temple is Tiruvalleswarar and Tiruvalitham Udaya Nayanar. The Amman / Thayar of the temple is Jagadambika.

·       The Thala Virutcham of Sri Tiruvalleswarar Temple is Padiri and Kondrai. The Theertham offered in this temple is Bharadwaj Theertham.

·       The Agamam / Pooja performed in Sri Tiruvalleswarar Temple is Kameekam. The presiding deity in this temple is a swayambumurthy.

·       Lord Vinayaka of this temple is worshipped and praised as Varasiddhi Vinayaka.

·       The Vimana – tower which is situated about the sanctum sanctorum is made of the Gajabrushta design. This design replicates the back end of an elephant. Three-tier design is used to construct the Rajagopuram of the temple.

·       The historical name of the place where the temple is situated was named as Tiruvalithayam.

·       Sri Tiruvalleswarar Temple is an ancient temple which ages around 1000 – 2000 years located at Padi, Chennai district.


Festivals Celebrated in this Temple

Chithirai Brahmmotsavam is celebrated during the months of April – May. Jupiter (Guru) transit days and Thai Kiruthikai is celebrated in the months January – February.


Prayers and Thanks Giving by the Devotees

People pray for good health, to get remedies for illness, and to remove obstacles from wedding plans. Devotees wear yellow vastras and pray to Dakshinamurthy to seek wisdom. Devotees believe that praying on a full moon day will grant devotees total salvation.

On Thursdays, Devotees pray with yellow vastras to Jupiter to get relief from adverse aspects of the planet.
