Sri Sathyamurthy Temple

    Sri Sathyamurthy Temple is an ancient temple.This temple is 2000 years old.It is a rock cut temple (Kudavarai kovil) where Lord Shiva temple is also present adjacent to it.This temple is situated just 21 kms from Pudukottai, place called Thirumayam named after Lord Tiru Mayyar.It is one of the magnificient temple among the 108 Divya desas.The presiding deity of this temple is Lord Sathyamurthi with his wives standing on a rock.The other Sanctum found here is Lord Vishnu's sculpture in sleeping position which is called "Aari Thuyil" in tamil.This position represents the sense of knowing the present situation.Along with the beauty of Fort, both Lord Shiva temple and Lord Vishnu temple appears in the same place which is the best tourist attraction.

Temple History

  Lord Vishnu was lying on Adishesha pretending to be asleep.Goddess Mahalakshmi and Goddess Bhoodevi were there with Lord Vishnu.The two demons, Madhut and Kaidaba came there to disturb Goddess Mahalakshmi and Goddess Bhoodevi. Both got afraid of the demons and hid themselves in Lord Vishnu's Chest and Foot respectively.As Lord Vishu was asleep,Adishesha din't want to disturb the sleep of Vishnu,spitted the venom and drove away the demons.Lord Vishnu appreciated the action of Adishesha as he did this only for good cause.This event can be seen in the sculpture of Aari Thuyil position.

  • Banyan tree is the Sthala Vruksha of the temple.

  • The Lord Perumal's sculpture and other sculptures are very beautiful and it is a love of art.
  • It is said that this temple belongs to Seventh century.Lord Sathyamurthy granted darshan to sage Sathya Maharishi in this temple.
  • Both Lord Shiva temple (Sathyagireeshawaran) and Lord Vishnu temple (Sathyamurthy) lies in the same compound wall.That is from a single rock.
  • Devotees cannot circumambulate a single temple but only jointly.
  • As both temples belongs to the same compound ,it promotes harmony among the vaishanavites and saivites.
  • There is a strong belief that Thayar comes to rescue devotees when they are in trouble.
  • Devotees pray for their wedding and child birth to Lord Sathyamurthy to come true.

Festivals

  • Thailakappu is performed once in 12 years for the presiding deity.
  • Krishnajayanthi, Aadi pooram are celebrated.
  • Vaikasi pournami is a special celebration.At that time Car festival ( ther thiruvizha) take place.
  • Diwali,Thai pongal and both Tamil & English Newyear are celebrated.

Offerings

  Devotees offers vastras,bangles and dolls to Thayar and also perform Thirumanjanam to Thayar.Lord Sathyamurthi is offered with vastras,butter,tulsi garlands and light lamps.
