Mahalingeswarar Temple is one of the ancient and famous Lord Shova temple located it Thiruvidaimarudur, a village which lies nearer to Kumbakonam city and one of the taluk HQ of Tanjore district.
Temple History / Specials
- Lord Shiva is worshiped as Mahalingeswaraswamy and he is in the form of Jothimayalingam.
- While his consort Goddess Parvati is worshiped as Pirguchuntaragujambigai.
- This temple is on of the "Paadal Petra Sthalam" and the Lord has special mention in famous Tamil literature Tevaram.
- There are 149 inscriptions associated with this temple indicating contributions from various rulers like Cholas, Pandyas, Thanjavur Nayaks and Tahanjavur Maratha Rulers.
- The present masonry was built by Chola rulers. The complex of the Temple is one of the largest in Tamil nadu (State) and it hosts four(4) gateway towers called as Gopurams.
- The temple consists of many shrines while Mahalingeswaraswamy, Pirguchuntaragujambigai and Mookambigai being the most important Shrines.
