Like his father Marudhavana also had no interest in studies and he went to sail as a trader in seas , promising his father that he will bring various treasures in return of the journey. After some time the ship that went arrived back, Pattinathar was surprised to see his son Marudhavanan. The ship was full of sacks. Pattinathar hugged his son and Marudhavanan said that the sack is full of precious things and went away.
Being surprised, Pattinathar opened the sacks, but he was shocked to see the sack full of cow dungs and husks. He angrily went to his home and kicked the sack furiously. On seeing this Pattinathar's mother asked " Why you are so angry?". He explained the things happened. Then mother gave a box to Pattinathar which her grandson gave it to her.
In that box there was a quote " Even a headless needle will not accompany you in you death".
Pattinathar realized what life is. After that Pattinathar saw everything around him was an illusion.
He felt his mother as Goddess Shakti and his son as Lord Murugan. Pattinathar expressed his wife the idea of becoming sanyasi (sage). Hearing this his wife cried like anything and later he consoled herself. And she told that she will also live the life of Sanyasi at home.
Pattinathar's wife offered box containing dresses of his ancestors which they consider as divine to him. There was six loin cloths inside the box. As per her mother's instruction Pattinathar went to Gurukulam and got the blessings of Guru and was offered a Thriuvodu (Beggers use it to collect money in front of temples). Pattinathar went to his mother to get the first alms (as the first alms should be from mother) and got it.
