Bhimashankar Temple History

Legends say that upon the request of the Gods to defeat the demon, Tripurasura, Lord Shiva has taken the form of Bhima in the Sahyadri Hills. From the sweat that poured forth from Shiva after the battle with the demon, was formed the river Bhimarathi. Goddess Parvati as Kamalaja is worshipped. She helped Shiva in the battle to defeat the asura.

Lord Shiva took a Rudravatar to defeat the Asura. Devotees prayed to Shiva,” In order to save the good people, reside here forever.” Lord Shiva listened to their prayers and stayed there as Jyotirlinga eternally.

The temple of Bhimasankar is built in Hemadpanti style. The shikara of this temple was built by Nana Phadnavis. The ideal time to visit this temple is during Mahashivratri, where thousands of devotees gather to seek the blessings of Bhimasankar Jyotirlinga.

Special worship is done to Shivaganas, Shakini and Dakini, who helped Shiva in the battle with the asura. Saint Jnaneshwar has visited this temple many times.
