Manakula Vinayagar Temple Puducherry / Pondicherry Vinayagar Temple / Famous temples of Pondicherry

Arulmigu Manakula Vinayagar:

Manakula Vinayagar Temple is a Hindu temple situated in the Union Territory of Puducherry,India. The temple is dedicated to Lord Ganesha,the remover of obstacles.this temple was in existence before French came and settled in Pondycherry i.e, before 1666. According to sasthra,Lord Ganesha named in sixteen types based on his various forms facing east coast near Bay of Bengal named Bhuvanesha Ganapathy which is now called as Manakula Vinayagar.
In Tamil,the word 'Manal' means Sand and the word 'Kulam' means Pond near sea. Earlier the temple was surrounded full of sand around pond.so people called Manalkulathu Vinayagar later it became 'Manakula Vinayagar'. The French and Missionaries tried to demolish the vinayagar idol but could not do so.All the Himdus objected strictly and migrated to Moratandi English Territory.

Overview:

The Presiding deity Lord Vinayagar in the sanctum blesses his devotees with four hands,top two hands holding anugsam,pasam and the right lower hand with abayadama muthra and the left one with varadhana muthra. The vimana above the sanctum is fully covered with gold plated. Sri Bala Vinayagar  and Sri Balasubramaiyar temple in the pragara is covered with silver vimana. Different kinds of Vahanas are kept in theVahana mandapa near the temple and also a marriage hall is found. Inside the temple the southern side pragara wall has three rows of gods sculptures and stone engravings. In the top row,33 different types of Vinayagar idol and in second row,25 types of Vinayagar idols are found. The third row has the stone engravings of Vinayagar Kavasam,Bharathiyar's Vinayagar Nanmanimalai,ashtalakshmi Sthothiram,Idumban and Kadamban Kavasam and Sri Vinayagar Sthothiram are found. The Golden Chariot is present in the temple.Once in a year,on Vijayadasami day,the Golden Chariot run outside the temple only in Maada Veedhis.

Thollaikkathu Siddhar:

Nearly 300 years before Saint standing 6ft tall,broad forehead,glittering blissful eyes,big hole bearing ear,small pot bellied with hand extending upto knee cap and hands with lotus regai,guru medu and sni medu at height showing arul gnana regai got enlightenment from this deity and attained samadhi in this temple. From then on people bring their new born here for worship before going to any other temple.

Mahan Vanna Sarabam Dhandapani Swmigal has sung Sthothira Parthigam on Lord Manakula Vinayagar. Sri V.M.Subramaniya Iyer had written 'Puduvai Manakula Vinayagar Suprabadham'.Also 100 years back Puduvai Mahavidvan Sri.P.A.Ponnuswamy had written 'Manakula Vinayagar Nanmani Malai'. Puduvai Nellithope, Sri.G.Ramaiya Chettiyar had written 'Sri Manakula Vinayagar Parthigam'.

The festivals celebrated in manakula Vinayagar temple includes Newyear,Thai Ammavasai ,Maha Sivarathri,Maasimaham,Vaigasi Visagam,Aani Thirumanjanam for Narthana Ganapathy,Vinayagar Chathurthi,Vijayadasami,kandashasti Vizha,Karthigai and Somavara poojaigal.
