THIRU KOTHUMBI

‘Thumbi’ means a kind of insect called dragonfly. ‘Kothumbi’ means the king of insects. This ‘Thirukothumbi’ is a part of poetry in Thiruvasagam. The nature of all insects is to get attracted and reach the beautiful flowers of different colors and to those having sweet nectar. Similarly, according to thirukothumbi, the nature of Human beings must be to reach the eternal soul, which is the God.

THIRUVASAGAM VERSE:

திருகோத்தும்பி

“கண்ணப்பன் ஒப்பதோர் அன்பின்மை கண்டபின்

என்னப்பன் என்னொப்பின் என்னையும் ஆட்கொண்டருளி

வண்ணப்பநிதேன்னை வாவென்ற வான்கருணை

சுன்னப்பொன்நீற்றர்கே சென்றூதாய் கோத்தும்பி”

EXPLANATION:

In the above verses,Manickavasagar soulfully expresses his devotion towards God by the following words: ”Kannappan, one of the sixty three Nayanmars, was at the peak of unconditional love, by offering his own eyes to Lord Shiva. I was just standing at the initial stage of worship and love. But, My Father, Lord Shiva showered his invaluable blessings to me and made me a human being with an heart filled with divinity and love. So, Kothumbi (the king dragonfly) please go ahead and sing to the Lord who has adorned himself with the divine Thiruneeru (Vibhoodhi).God gets mesmerized by unconditional love at any stage!

·         VERSE:

வைத்தநிதி பெண்டிர்மக்கள் குலங்கல்வி என்னும்

பித்த உலகில் பிறப்போ டிறப்பென்னுஞ்

சீத்த விகாரக் கலக்கந் தெளிவித்த

வித்தகத் தேவற்கே சென்றூதாய் கோத்தும்பி

EXPLANATION:

In the above verse, Manikavasagar says, “The world is filled with human beings having desires and thoughts of the money and property earned;  loved life-partner;  children; education and knowledge of  the external world, etc. The cycle of rebirth progresses through these silly thoughts of human beings. But, My Lord Shiva, who is an invisible  embodiment of courage and wisdom, freed me from these kinds of thoughts. So, The king of dragon flies! please go and sing to the almighty and mesmerize him.!”

·         VERSE:

சட்டோ நினைக்க மனதமூதாஞ் சங்கரனைக்

கேட்டேன் மறப்பேனே கேடுபடாத் திருவடியை

யோட்டாத பாவித் தொழும்பரைநா முருவரியோஞ்

சிட்டாய சிட்டற்கே சென்றூதாய் கோத்தும்பி

EXPLANATION:

“Is there any loss in thinking about Lord Shiva , who safeguards the soul? No.There isn’t.  Will I ever forget the holy foot of the eternal power! I have no intension even to see a person who forgets to think about the supreme power. Kothumbi! Please go and praise the Lord, who stands first among all souls!” says Manikavasagar.

·         VERSE:

“ஒன்றாய் முளைத்தெழுந் தெத்தனையோ கவடுவிட்டு

நன்றாக வைத்தென்னை நாய்சிவிகை ஏற்றுவித்த

வென்றதை தாதைக்கு மெம்மனைக்குந் தம்பொருள்

குன்றாத செல்வற்கே சென்றூதாய் கோத்தும்பி”

EXPLANATION:

“Lord Shiva stood as the supreme power  and he was the reason for everything that is happening now . All the branches of life aroused from him. He defined me as a courageous human being and made me to stand here amidst all the devotees. He is my Father. He is my father’s father. Hence, Kothumbi! Please go to him and sing that he is an eternal power!” says Manikavasagar.
