Greatness Of Lord Ganesha | Lord Ganesh - 'The First God' Specials And Facts

Lord Ganesh:

Lord Ganesh , the remover of obstacle is the elder son of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvathi. He is also the god of Power and also knowledge and learning. As he is the remover of obstacle he is called as     ' Vigneshwara'. It is the habit of Hindus to worship Lord Ganesha first before starting anything to become free from all the obstacles that might come on their way. One can find the presence of Ganapathy in every place of worship of Hindus. All the Hindu temples has a shrine or place for Ganapathy. In every temple Lord Ganesh sits on the right side of the main deity. It is the practice of Hindus to put 'Thopikkaram' in front of Ganesha to complete the prayer.
He is respected and loved by every Hindus. The more devoted to Lord Ganapathi, the better will be the powers of Lord Ganesh in helping you lead a peaceful life. Lord Ganesh is of various forms. The most famous is Pancha Muka Ganapathi. He is also referred as Ganesha (Chief of Shiva's Army), Vigneshwara ( Remover of Obstacles), Pillayar ( Our Son), Gaja Mukha ( Elephant faced god), Eka Danta ( God with one Tusk), Lambodhara (God with Big Paunch) etc., Lord Ganesh is considered  as married to two wives Sidhi and Budhi in North India and bachelor in South India. But in some temples  in South India like Chidambaram Lord Ganesh is along with his wives. He is unique in appearance, with elephant head, extraordinarily big paunch, broken trunk and with his steed being a very small mouse. Coconut and Modakas are very dear to him.



Born History - Lord Ganesh:

Many stories that depicts the born history of Lord Ganesh. The most popular one is, once when Lord Shiva was away, Mother Parvathi wanted to take bath in the river. To guard against any unwelcome intrusion, she took a little turmeric paste from her body and created a young boy and gave him instruction not to allow anyone inside. Unfortunately at this time Lord Shiva arrived. The boy created by Mother Parvthi refused Lord Shiva's admission though told he is the husband of Parvathi. Lord Shiva got angry and cut off the head of the boy and threw it away using his trident. Mother Parvathi came back and became very sad seeing the boy killed. Lord Shiva wanted to console Parvathi, sent his army to bring the first head that they see on their way. The first head that they saw was the head of dying elephant. Lord Shiva fixed on the boy's trunk and brought back him to life and adopted him as his elder son and made him chief of his army.

Ganesha's lost tusk:

Most popular story of  Lord Ganapathi on how he lost his one of his tusk is when Veda Vyasa composed the huge epic Mahabaratha. He needed somebody to write down his composition. Veda Vyasa requested Lord Ganapathi, being the god of knowledge to do this job. Lord Ganapathi agreed on one condition that Veda Vyasa should dictate at one stretch without break. Vyasa agreed but he put a condition that Lord Ganapathi should write only after understanding it. After agreeing to this Lord Ganapathi broke one of his tusks and used it as pen. Vyasa composed extremely difficult to understand verses, whenever he wanted time to think. This was the reason why Lord Ganapathi became the one tusked god.

Importance & Greatness :

Lord Ganesh has a separate shrine in every Hindu temple. Devotees worship him first before worshiping other gods. Even in chanting mantras the first mantra chanted is dedicated to Lord Ganesh. On account of any religious functions the first prayer is dedicated to Lord Ganesh. The principal scriptures dedicated to Lord Ganesha are Ganesha Purana, the Mudgala Purana and Ganapathi Atharvashira. Every village or town/city has Vinayagar idol in every streets and corners which shows the love and respect towards him. Not only India also all over the world he is celebrated by the Hindus. There are many temples in India and abroad dedicated to Lord Ganesh. Vinayagar Chathurthi festival dedicated Lord Ganesh is grandly celebrated by all the Hindus. Large statues of Lord Ganesh made using clay are placed  and worship is done by the Hindus after which the statues are merged in the sea after the celebration.
