Bhavani Sangameshwarar temple

Bhavani Sangameshwarar temple

The Sangameswarar temple is located in Bhavani, in the Erode district of Tamil Nadu. It is present in the confluence of the three rivers, Cauvery, Bhavani river and the AagayaGAngai, which is believed to be an invisible underground water resource and hence it is given the name ‘Sangameswarar temple’(‘Sangam am’ means Union).

This temple is also called Kooduthurai and Padhuma Giri by the localites. The temple lies exactly at the meeting point of Cauver, Bhavani, and Amudhanadhi. Amudhanadhi flows as Antharvahini, as Kalaimagal Saraswathi flows at Triveni Sangamam. Thus, this place is also called Dakshna Triveni Sangamam.

History/Legend:
Once, Kubera, who is the son of Vishrava was given an aircraft to fly across the land and visit the devotional places in order to worship Lord Shiva. While he was flying, he saw a range of species like deer, cow, elephant, snake, rat, and tiger drinking water in the same river under an Ilandhai tree. He was amazed by the scene and he heard a voice which answered his questions. According to the Asareeri, he was said that all the Vedhas and many  Gandharvas have inhabited the place and was advised to worship the Shiva Lingam present under the Ilandhai tree.

Specialties of the temple

*The Sthala Virutcham of the temple is the Ilandhai temple and even now, the fruits from the tree are used for the poojas performed.
*There was a cave connection (Suranga Padhai) between Chidambaram Natarajar temple and this temple and Poojas were performed at the same time in both these temples during the Empire of Chozha and Pandiya Kings.
*The temple has its own unique stone carvings and rock statues. There is an interesting fact to be noted in this temple. When any liquid is poured on the two identical stone statues present in front of the Ambal shrine, one is seen smiling and the other is seen crying. This is an exotic architecture of the ancient Tamil people.
*The temple is mentioned in the poetic works of ThirunyanaSambandhar and Arunagirinadhar in Pillaithamizh and Thirupugazh, respectively.
