Arulmigu Agneeswarar temple is located in Thiruvidaimarudur town of Tanjore district.It is eighteen kms away from Kumbakonam and twenty-nine kms away from Mayilaaduthurai. It stands in the 36^thpalace among the ‘Paadal Petra Sthalangal’. It is been described as, Karukkodi Neeppaargal Saerum Knjanoor (கருக்கோடி நீப்பார்கள் சேரும் கஞ்சனூர்) by Sekizhar. Hence it is also called as KAnjanoor temple. Thirunavukkarasar(Appar) sung many Padhigam on this temple.

This temle has several other names such as, Pulasavanam, Paraasapuram, AgniPuram, Kamsapuram, Mukthipuram, Mokshapuram and Brahmapuram.

History/Legend:

Sages like Sounagar started the holy sacrifice called Sathyaragam at the banks of the river Ganges. After twelve years of poojas, there came Mahapouraanigar Soothamaamunivar. All the saints welcomed and worshipped him. They pleased him by saying that he is the person,because of whom the world could get rid of all the sins and also said that the place became more sacred because of his arrival. Suthamaamunuvar said that there is a place in the south which is much more better that this bank of Ganga river. It is called as Kamsapuram, where the Cauvery river flows as uttaravani.

Temple tree:

PurasaMaram is the Thala Virutcham of this temple. It is said that if one goes around this tree eleven times for one mandalam(48 days), he will definitely get rid of all his debts and become rich.

Specialities  of the temple:

• Lord Shiva, who is called as MadhisoodaPerumaan( the one who wears the moon ) is believed the nullify SukraDhosha.
• Suthamaamunivar said that bathing in the Vadacauvery is equal to taking bath in the Ganga river for twelve years.
• The Neetharkarmangal done here for ancestors is equal to those which are prepared in Kashi.
