History:

The place is called Bannari because of the Bannari Amman Temple which was a forest called Dhandanayakkan forest several years ago. Those period the cowherds used to drive their cattle to the fields and cows are fed on grass overhere. The cowherds used to extract milk from each cow. One particular cow did not allow the cowherd to get milk nor allow its calf to go near it. Once the cowherd noticed that particular cow standing beneath a Vengai tree and began to flow the milk from its udder automatically. The cowherd was surprised to see such happening. He told the news to everybody and the news spreaded like a wildfire. The cow repeated the same behaviour. Villagers removed the thickly grown under where the cow used to stand and gave milk. They found a sand-hill and Swayambu linga near it. All the people prayed the linga with folded hands. One of deity got into a  trance and began to pass the divine message to everybody. According to his words, it was understood that the deity safeguarded the traders from Tamilnadu who passed by that way to Mysore carrying goods. The deity decided to stay on there to bless and protect the Pilgrims. The deity was Bannari Mariamman who became the permanent abode of the goddess.
