History & Overview:

The town Kulasekarapattinam is named after the ruler of this place Kulasekara Pandiyan. The Mother Mutharamman appeared directly and gave dharshan to the King, hence the town named after him. Once Mother appeared in the dream of a worker and asked him to make an idol of her and send it through a priest from Kulasai. Then she appeared in the Priest's dream and asked him to install the idol near the swayambu.
The temple has three mandapas which are called Artha Mandapam, Maha Mandapam, Kodi Mandapam. The other deities present here are Pechiyamman, Karuppasamy and Bairavar. People affected by the small pox disease come here to get remedy. Small Pox appears in the body like pearls which people called as muthu in Tamil. As a remedy people use to store water around the mother to bring the heat of the boils(muthu) down and dry them. Mother cures them. Thus Mother in the temple is called as Mutharamman.
