History:

Two hundred years ago a group of people immigrated to Madurai from near Karur. The place was a dense forest. The migrated people tented on a place which is today's Pandi Kovil. An old lady named Valliammai was also there in the group who had dream in the night. In that dream, a long beard saint appeared and said that he was the ancient ruler of Madurai named Pandiya Nedunchezhiyan who gave misjudgment to Kovalan, husband of Kannagi. For that I was born again as human and did penance against Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva accepted my prayers and I surrendered the feet and this place once my palace. Dig here, my idol is there in eight feet depth and built a temple for me. I will save you and your group from all the problems. After saying this he disappeared. Valliammal told about this dream to everyone and dig the place and found the idol of Pandi Muneeswarar. This place is now the Pandi Kovil. Another interesting story of Samaya Karuppar is once a white man going for hunting, came to the temple and asked Samaya Karuppar, how many animals will I kill today. Samaya Karuppar kept quiet. The White man could not hunt any animal got angry and came to temple and broke the head and hands of Samaya Karuppar. Before he left village the white man and his horse turned into stone. After this incident people are very scared of  Samaya Karuppar. Even today his idol is without head and hands.
