History/Legend:
Once there was a battle between the Dhevars and Asurars. This refers to the fight between the good and the evil. The Dhevars won the battle by blessings from God. The Asurars became furious and started planning to take revenge on the Dhevars. After knowing their plans, their chief Guru Sugkirashshariyar started spreading diseases such as small pox , chickenpox, measles etc among all the Dhevars. These Thevars suffered severe untolerable pain and finally pleaded the help of Lord Shiva.
Lord Shiva, in order to help the Thevars, created an Amman by combining  the divine holy light of his body, the coolness  of the moon and the Ganga. He named the Amman as Sithalaambikai(சீதலாà®®்பிகை). Sithalai means coolness.
Lord Shiva first informed Parvathi about his creation and taught the mantra of Sithalaambikai. Then he said about his creation to the Thevars and taught them about the mantra. By the grace of Sithalaambikai all the diseases of the Thevars were cured when they recited the mantra.
Sithalaambikai is a powerful God who is believed to be able to cure many diseases and help her devotees with a prosperous life.
