You will be astounded to know that Vishnu Durga Devi here was somewhere unattended, until the Chola kings installed her here. She is one who the mighty Cholas worshipped for victory when they even started preparing for the war. You can see the town is close to Pazhaiyarai, where the Cholas ruled. Don’t think she is only from the historical times. Durga Devi here is whom Lord Ram prayed when he was on the route to Sri Lanka on his divine mission. She offers blessings and will power to those who are determined on their missions. Victory is for sure for whom bows to Vishnu Durga of Patteeswaram.Temple History / Story
What about the story behind the temple, and the leading deity Lord Shiva? Of course, the temple came into existence because of his wife Goddess Parvati wanted to perform a penance. She asked Divine Cow Kamadhenu to find a place. Kamadhenu instructed Patti, her daughter to take care of the same. Patti found this place peaceful and informed the same to the Goddess. Parvati was also given a Linga by Patti for the penance. Hence this place is named after Patti, as Patteeswaram.Specialities
Lord Shiva too has his share of miracles here. When the young sage Thiru Gnana Sambandar walked to this place, he was slowed down by the scorching sun. Lord Shiva immediately ordered for a pearl umbrella to his Boodha Ganas. When the young sage walked closer, Lord Shiva could no longer resist himself to view this child. Nandi, who always stands between the Lord and his followers was hiding the vision. Lord Shiva ordered Nandi to move off a little so that he could view Gnana Sambanda clearly even from a distance. Next time, when you set foot here, don’t miss to have a glance at the Nandi moving his head a bit away, unlike in other Shiva temples.Temple Timings
