History:

Adhi Thiruvarangam, one of the most ancient place of Tamilnadu, Situated about 60kms South West of Villupuram on the banks of South Pennai river has the most established shrine for Ranganathar Perumal. This temple traces all the way back to the main Yugam - Kretha Yugam and the primary Avathaaram - Matsya Avathaaram. Thus, this Kshetram is alluded to as 'Adhi' Rangam.

Lying in a resting stance from South to North, God Ranganathar has his head on the lap of Sri Devi-to his left side, while his left leg is extended towards Bhooma Devi seen at his feet. To his right is Garuda at any point ready to serve Lord Ranganathar.

Deity :

Moolavar : Ranganathar in a anantha sayanam pose confronting the East

Thayar : Ranganayaki Thayar(separate sannidhi)

Significance :

This shrine has the giant Ranganathar carving which is greater than the Lord at Srirangam. Lord Ranganathar is found in an enormous east-bound resting stance and measures more than 15 feet, not found in any Divya Desam. This temple is referenced in Skanda Purana. This temple is believed to be older than Rangaswamy Temple in Srirangam, hence this shrine got its name as Adhi Rangam meaning Original Rangam.

 Puranas :

1. The Devas, who lost the Vedic sacred writings subsequent to being crushed by Asura Shomugan, moved toward Brahmma who thusly looked for the assistance of God Narayana.

Discovering the hidden place of the Asura under the ocean, God Narayana appeared as Matsya and crushed the Asura and gave back the Vedic sacred texts to Brahmma. It is accepted that the Lord started the Vedic knowledge teaching to Brahmma in this Kshetram.

2. In Kretha Yugam, a ruler by name Suratha Keerthi carried on with a prosperous life however he had one unfulfilled wish. He didn't have a kid. As proposed by Sage Narada, he came, with his better half, to where Lord Ranganatha was lying under Adhiseshan and embraced repentance. Noting his prayers, he was honored with four kids.

3. Chandran, who showed love to just one of his 27 spouses, was reviled by his different wives to lose his attractive looks. He came to Uthara Rangam, attempted repentance in the temple tank toward the South East of the shrine and was freed from his sin. Consequently, the pushkarni here is called Chandran Pushkarani.
