History
According to Hindu legend, Murugan battled with evil presences in three places, in particular, the ocean at Tiruchendur, land at Thirupparankundram, and in the air at Thiruporur. It is believed that Sage Agastya on his way to Pothigai hills visited this spot. Since Muruga destroyed the Tharuka Asura, this place came to be known as Porur (or in Tamil means war) and furthermore called by different names like Tharukapuri and Samarapuri. As indicated by the Sthala Puranam, sooner or later of time, the place was lowered in a downpour. A sage named Chidambara Adigal also called Chidambara Swamigal was living in Madurai and a heavenly voice requested that he should uncover the sculpture under a palm tree. He uncovered the sculpture and built a temple around it. There is a different shrine devoted to him in this temple and he is given exceptional regard during the Vaikasi Visagam celebration. During the last day of the celebration, he is portrayed converging with the presiding god.
