Sthala Purana/Story of The Temple
God Varadaraja Perumal is said to have recovered the Vedas taken from Brahma by Madhukaida Asuras, and taken to the deep side of the sea, and given it back to him here. Lord Vishnu moreover alleviated Lord Shiva of the revile he committed about removing one of the heads of Brahma. He was cursed by Goddess Saraswati with Brahahathi Dosham (caused by Killing a Brahman). After destroying the fifth head of Lord Brahma, The skull got stuck in Shiva's hand and all Shiva's attempts to remove the skull from his hand was ended up in failure. He wandered all around the place for finding the solution and this made Lord Shiva immense anger. Then he visited Lord Krishnan(In Balan Form) here, where he gave some theertham and asked Shiva to visit Thirukandiyur where he got freed from this and the Kapalam stuck in his hand was set out free.
The Main Idol
The Main Idol of Lord Krishna was broken and as a practice of Broken Idols should not be kept inside the sanctum, it is placed in the Altars. In the next redesign of the temple, it was replaced by Lord Perumal as the Main deity, which is now being worshipped as Sri Varadharaja Perumal.
