This is a unique temple where both Shiva and Murugan are considered as Main deities. The Sthala Vruksham is Kura (Bottle Brush) tree and the leaves of this tree are accepted to fix venomous nibbles, including snakes. The theerthams are Saravana Theertham and Ganga well. It was before known as Thirukuravadi.
Sthala Purana/ Story
We all are familiar with the Purana of Murugan killing Surapadman. Notwithstanding, one of his children, Hiranyasuran, got away from Murugan and appeared as shark fish and covered up in the ocean close to this spot. Murugan chased him and when he was not sure which shark is the demon, Goddess Parvathi appeared and gave him Vajra Vel to kill the demon and with her blessings Lord Muruga destroyed him. The place where Lord Muruga waited is known as Thayangam Badi later called Tharangambadi After this destruction, Murugan was sinned for killing a Shiva devotee. He was advised to go to His dad under the Kura tree to revile from the sin and he got freed by executing the same.
During Ardha Jama Pooja (night ritual), the first pooja is offered to the Badra Lingam beneath the Kura tree. In this temple, Shiva is present behind Murugan in the Garba Graham (sanctum). As He had taken out the transgression of His child ( Papa Vimochanam), He is called Papavimochana Peruman. He had offered conspicuousness to the Son and stays behind the scenes. This is the unique shrine where we can see the presence of Son and Father in the same sanctum.
It is believed that Devasena originally performed repentance here. Henceforth there is a different altar for Devasena in this temple. This is one of the temples with Arunagirinathar's Thirupugazh. It has added history where planet Rahu implored Muruga underneath the Kura tree. It is viewed as a Parihara Sthala for Rahu, Ketu, and Sevvai doshas. In this temple, all the deities like Murthis-Somaskandar, Natarajar, Chandrasekarar, Pradosha Nayakar and Chandikesar-seem in Subramanya Swaroopam with Vajra Vel. This is one of the few Murugan temples, where the elephant is the Vahana/Vehicle rather than a peacock.
