Bhaktavatsala Perumal Temple:
Bhaktavatsala Perumal Temple, devoted to Lord Vishnu, one of the Divya Desams, is situated in Thirukannambigai. This Lord is having 10 Pasurams sung on Him by Thirumangai Azhwar. Sri Muthuswamy Deekshitar sang a Keerthi on this Lord "Bakthavatsala" in the unique raga Vamshavathi. It is called Krishna Mangala Kshetram. This is one of the Panchakanna Kshetrams, however, Krishna isn't the managing deity, He comes as a processional god. The other four are
- Loganathaperumal Temple, Thirukannankudi,
- Gajendravarada Perumal Temple, Kapisthalam,
- Neelamegaperumal Temple, Thirukannapuram
- Ulaganathaperumal Temple, Thirukovilur.
Sthala Purana:
As we are familiar with Thirupaarkadal history, numerous creatures emerged from it and one among them is Lakshmi. As she performed Tapas here to marry Lord Vishnu, Lord agreed and asked Vishvaksenar (Senaimuthalvar) to fix the proper muhurtham. Then, He came to this spot and married her in the midst of the reciting of Vedic hymns. As He came from the far away Thiruparkadal, He is called Perum Pura Kadal. The spot came to be called Thiru Kanna Mangai (spouse/admirer of Kannan) to respect Her. As She took the Lord's hand after He performed abhishekam to Her, She is called Abhishekavalli. Where She performed tapas, is called Shree Mandapam, as Shree is one of Her names.
There was a rishi by name Romesar. He narrated the tale of Nala to the Pandavas here. It is believed that this Rishi and all the Devas amassed here to attend the marriage of Lakshmi with the Lord. They came as Bees and remained here.
Shri Thiru Kannamangai Andan, one of the followers of Shri Nadamuni Swamigal dedicated his life to serving the Lord and his Guru and he was completely devoted to keeping the temple clean. One day he thought " Those who own pets like dog shower fondness on them; will not my Lord accept me, to whom I am the lowly dog?" The next second, he took the form of a dog and converged with the Lord on the Thiruvonam star in the Tamil month of Aani. As he accepted his devotee to merge with Himself, he named to be Bhaktaraavi Perumal. (Some say that it is Bhaktaraagi Perumal as the devotee and the Swamy become one). Another reference is that as Lord comes racing to guide his enthusiasts with the speed of Aavi (steam), He is called Bhakataraavi Perumal. Later, this name became Batharavi Perumal.
Significance
Taking bath in this tank during the Tamil month of Masi is believed to give massive advantages. We could see a huge beehive on the Artha Mandapam before Thayar Sanctum, on the rectangular windows on the southern and northern dividers. Miraculously, during Uttarayanam (Jan to July), the honey bees possess the northern window, and during Dakshinayanam (July to Jan), the southern window!
As Vishnu offered darshan to Lakshmi after She had a holy bath, the tank is called Darshana Pushkarni. Also, Chandra had His revile eliminated after simply locating this Pushkarni, it is called Darshana Pushkarni (darshan=sighting).
