Sri Ardhanareeswarar Temple:
Sri Ardhanareeswarar/Arthanareeswarar Temple, devoted to Lord Shiva is located on the hilltop of Thiruchengode. The Presiding Deities are God Sri Arthanareeswarar/Sri Mathoru Pagar and Goddess Sri Bagam Priyal . The temple is adorned with Sthala Theertham as Devatheertham and Sthala Vriksham (Sacred Tree) as Iluppai Tree
This is one of the 276 Devara Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalams and the fourth Shiva Sthalam in Kongu Nadu. It is believed that Lord Vishnu and Adiseshan have worshipped the Lord here.
Sthala Purana:
According to Legend, Adisheshan (the snake where Sri Mahavishnu rests) and Vayu (Lord of the Wind) battled among themselves to test their predominance. During one such battle, against Vayu's extreme breeze, Adhiseshan neglected to clutch Mount Meru. Three parts of Meru Malai came to earth with Adisheshan's blood strain. One such piece is this slope. Since it was red in shading because of Adisheshan's blood, it is called Sencode.
A fascinating reality is that this slope itself is considered as the Lingam. Before this slope, on the west side is the sculpture of an enormous Nandhi – seven feet long and four feet in tallness.
The unique component of this temple is that the symbol of the principal god is six feet in tallness with the right half portrayed as male and the left half as female. The male segment of the icon has Jadamudi (a bunch of hair), Thandam (stick), Silambu (anklet), and Rudraksha Mala though the female bit has a Kazhal at the leg and Thali around the neck. Because of the male/female idea of the icon, the divinity is known as Arthanareeswarar.
The Lord is also called Madhorubagan and Ammayappan. It is guaranteed that this uncommon stance of the Lord as prime god must be found in this sanctuary in the entire of Asia.
This temple has an emerald lingam "Maragatha Lingam" and a little sculpture of Birunki Maharishi before the Moolavar.
Sage Birunki used to visit Kailash, he would take form as a little bug and offer his love only around Lord Shiva ignoring Ambal though they were seated together. Infuriated by this, Ambal reviled Sage Birunki. Lord Siva interfered and assuaged Ambal by disclosing to her that Ambal is indivisible from Shiva. This is accepted to be another purpose for this novel association of Swamy and Ambal as it addresses the union of manly and ladylike energies of the universe.
Another belief is that Ambal revered this Maragatha Lingam. Every day many Poojas were performed to this Lingam and these poojas are accepted to be performed by the Ambal herself.
Another legend related to Thiruchengode is that when Saint Thirugnanasambanthar visited this spot he tracked down that people were unfavorably infected by "vishakaichal" (Viral Fever) due to "vishakkatru" (dangerous contaminations noticeable all around). He sang the "Thiruneelakanda Pathigam" to ease people from their misery.
