Dhenupureeswarar Temple Madambakkam | Madambakkam Sivan Temple | Lord Shiva Temple in Chennai

Dhenupureeswarar Temple :

Dhenupureeswarar Temple, devoted to Lord Shiva situated at Madambakkam in Chennai. The Directing Deity is called Dhenupureeswarar/Sittrerinathar/Sittreri Aludaiya Nayanar and Goddess is called Dhenukambal/Nambirattiyar.

Saint Arunagirinathar of the 15 Century A.D, creator of the 'Thirupugazh,' has sung a song on Lord Murugan of this shrine.

Significance:

This temple is known for its dazzling sculptures (140+), which stand demonstration of the astounding chiseling abilities of the Cholas and other Dravidian lords. There is a unique temple close by, lodging 18 Siddhars, Sri Seshadri Swamigal, and Maha Meru (Lalitha Parameshwari). Since this spot has recovered the sins of sage Kapila and God Indra, it is thought of as a Parihara Sthalam.

Sthala Purana:

King Sagara conducted Ashwamedha Yagna and sent his Royal horse alone to circumvent the world. As indicated by customary guidelines of the Yagna, the horse in this way sent should get back to the beginning stage successfully without being caught by anyone. Indira, desirous of Sagara got the horse and tied it close to sage Kabila who was in retribution then, at that point. Sagara's child seeing the horse, thinking that Kabila had caught the horse, started to torment the savvy, who, on opening his eyes reviled him. The revile kept on influencing the succeeding ages of Sagara.

As prompted by Guru Sage Vasishta, King Bhagiratha, performed Shiva Puja, diminished every one of his precursors from the grasp of the revile and freed himself from the revile. Sage Kabila as well, felt very much that he had reviled the Sagara tradition. He started to worship Lord Shiva to offer penance for the transgression of reviling the Sagara family and to achieve salvation. He held a Shivalinga on the Left hand and offered blossoms by the right hand.

Lord Shiva appeared before the sage and asked him the reason for the Puja. Kabila said that considering the sacredness of the Lord, he didn't care to put it on polluted earth. Lord Shiva disclosed to him that he is everywhere in the earth. He told the sage to be born on earth as a cow, revere him as a Swayambu Linga, and achieve salvation. Thus, saying the Lord vanished. Sage Kabila, as instructed by Lord Shiva was conceived a cow. He was pouring the milk on a Shivalinga in a covered-up place.

The shepherd tossed a stone on the cow. Incapable to bear the aggravation, the cow moved. While moving, the back leg of the cow hit on the Linga from where the blood came out. Lord Shiva showed up before Kabila, the Cow. Kabila was ingested inside the Linga. As Kabila in his cow structure (Cow implies Dhenu or Kamadenu in Sanskrit) adored the Lord, He is known as Dhenupureeswarar.

People proceeded to illustrate the happenings to the Chola King who was coming to the disadvantage of Sitreri. He visited the spot and developed a temple for Lord Shiva there and the God was then known as Sittrerinathar and Goddess, Nambirattiyar. Where people met the King is the present Rajakizhpakkam and the town Sitreri (implies little lake) is presently called Madambakkam.
