Sri Koneswara Swamy Temple:
Sri Koneswara Swamy Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is situated in Kudavasal, southeast of Kumbakonam. The Presiding Deities are Sri Koneswarar, Sri Suryeswarar, Sri Birugu Nathar, and Goddess Sri Periyanayaki, Sri Brahannayaki. The temple is adorned with Theertham (Holy water) as Amritha Theertham and Sthala Vriksham (Sacred Tree) as Vaazhai (Plantain tree)
This is one of the 276 Devara Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalams and 94th Shiva Sthalam on the Southern bank of the stream Cauveri in Chozha Nadu (Thenkarai).
History:
This antiquated sanctuary was worked by King Kochengat Chola. This is a Maadak Koil and it has 18 stages to arrive at Lord Shiva's place of worship. The lower portion of this sanctuary is known as "Kudavayir Kottam". It is accepted that Kochengat Chola detained one of his foes, Seran Kanaikkal Irumporai in this Kottam.
This sanctuary discovers notice in the Puranaanuru and Aganaanuru writings of the Sangam time frame (300 BC – 300 CE) written works. The melodies by popular writers Kudavayil Keerthanar and Kudavayil Nallathanar are likewise important for Aganaanuru.
The recorded names of this spot are Garudathiri, Kathalivanam, and Vanmikaachalam. This current sanctuary's chronicled name is "Perunthirukkoil".
There are four stone engravings in this sanctuary that date back to the time of Chola King Kulothungan-III.

Sthala Purana:
Garudan (Garudazhvar), the falcon god and furthermore the lord of birds. Sage Kasyaba had two spouses, Kathru and Vinathai. Garudan was the child of Vinathai. Vinathai was bound to Kathru as a slave. Kathru requested the nectar from the divine world to deliver Vinathai. To save his mom, Garudan traveled to the divine world and got the pot of nectar.
While returning, a devil attempted to grab this pot from Garudan. Garudan put the pot on a close-by ant colony dwelling place and battled with the evil spirit and crushed him. Be that as it may, when he returned to recover the pot, he was unable to discover it as it had gotten covered by the ant colony dwelling place. He destroyed the ant colony dwelling place with his sharp nose and was shocked to discover a Shivalingam there. Master Shiva showed up before Garudan. Garudan appealed to the ruler requesting that he save his mom. Master Shiva saved Vinathai from the servitude of Kathru. Garudan remained here to revere the master and furthermore fabricated this sanctuary. Further, it is accepted that this Shivalingam that Garudan found was really the Kalas' edge that fell here.
The scratch marks from Garudan's bill can in any case be seen on the Shivalingam. There is a symbol of Garudan in this sanctuary and figures of Garudan can likewise be found in the compound dividers of the sanctuary.
