Vanamutti Perumal Temple
Sthala Purana / Story of The Temple:
The history of this great temple goes by this story. A King called Nirmalan once experienced a skin illness. While going through a forest, he went over a sage playing veena pleasantly. He fell at the feet of the sage and looked for his blessings for help from the sickness. Forgiving rishi showed a mantra to the lord and encouraged him to say the mantra every day. As per the rishi's recommendation King started to recite. Out of nowhere, he heard some voices and the voice said, "This is the voice of Lord Vishnu. You are influenced by an extreme dosha. Start your journey through the banks of Cauvery. Moovalur King Marga Sahayeswarar (Lord Shiva) will direct you. Bath in all the holy tanks on the way. You pause and stay at where your body turns out to be cured of the infection".
The lord halted the excursion at the spot as coordinated by the voice and was glad to see him very sound liberated from the illness. He petitioned Lord Vishnu with all appreciation. A tall Athi tree showed up from where God allowed darshan to the lord, with Mother Mahalakshmi on his chest. As every one of the sins of the ruler was washed off here, the spot came to be known as Koti Hathi meaning the place liberating the devotees from crores of doshas. In the days that followed, the name changed to Kozhi Kuthi. The King surrendered himself, started repentance on the banks of Cauvery, and became Pippala Maharshi. Presently there is a Mandapam in this spot and the Cauvery river close by is called Pippala Theertha.
Afterward, King Sarabhoji approached the sage Pippalar to give an answer for emerging from the sin done by him during war times. Pippalar encouraged him to adore Lord Sri Srinivasa Perumal and clean up in the Pushkarani for 48 days. Ruler Sarabhoji was bewildered by the excellence of Lord Sri Srinivasa and developed a wonderful sanctuary having 7 Praharams.
The popular "Pippalar Maharishi Theertham" where a sacred plunge is professed to fix skin illnesses is situated here. There is a Pippalar Sannathi in the Margasagayeswarar temple at Moovalur. As Pippalar was freed from Kodi Hathi Dosham, this spot came to be alluded to as Kodi Hathi Papa Vimochana Puram which in course of time became Kozhi Kuthi, the name by which this spot is alluded to now.
