Papanasanathar Temple :
Papanasanathar Temple, devoted to Lord Shiva is situated in Papanasam, Tirunelveli area. The directing deity here is Papanasa Swamy or Papavinaseswarar, the savior of sins. Significance:
A Poet named Namasivaya Kavirayar was living around here. He was an incredible aficionado of Ulagammai. He used to visit temples consistently and sing reverential melodies till 12 PM. One evening, he left the temple however proceeded with his songs on his way back home. The Goddess would not like to miss his melodies and henceforth she followed him. The poet had the habit of Paan. While spitting his paan, it fell on the Goddess accidentally. The Goddess didn't care about it. She showed up with the spit in the temple. At the point when the priest saw this a few days ago, he reported it to the King. The King needed to enquire about this occurrence and rebuff the guilty party. In his dream, the Goddess Ulagammai showed up and portrayed the occurrence. The next day, he tied the arms of Goddess idol with the strings and placed a flower on her arm; he welcomed the poet and requested that he sing reverential melodies. As and when he finished singing each tune, the string got unfastened individually. This portrays the significance of the poet.
Sthala Purana/ Story of The Temple:
According to Hindu legend, during the heavenly wedding of Shiva and Parvathi, there was a huge gathering of divinities at Kailash. Earth lost its equilibrium. Lord Shiva called Sage Agasthya to go to Pothigai Hills in the South and to adjust the Earth level as his single weight was sufficient for the reason to balance the heaviness of the large numbers of Rishis at Mount Kailash. As Sage Agasthya couldn't get a sight of the occasion and be imploring Shiva at this spot and satisfied by his devotion, Shiva appeared to him with his consort Lopamundra in Kalyana Pose. The waterfall close by the temple is hence called Agasthiyar Falls.
