Subterranean Cave:

Cave temples and monolithic rock temples carved out of stone are a form of early natural architecture and rock construction, a building technique in solid rock closely related to sculpture. The place Odisha is very well known for heritage, food, beaches, culture and activities. Odisha, previously known as Orissa, is one of the best destinations in India to experience the beauty of nature. They date back to the second century BCE. 

Significance of the Cave:

They are located 7km in the outskirts from Bhubaneswar. Udayagiri and Khandagiri caves are well known as Kataka caves or Cuttack caves. These are formed partly natural and partly artificial. They are located near the city of Bhubaneswar in Odisha, India. The word Khandagiri means broken hills and Udayagiri denotes the hill of sunrise. They both together are known as Twin hill caves.

Carving:

There are a total of 33 rock-cut caves on both the hills out of which 8 are excavated on Udayagiri hills while the others are on Khandagiri hill.  Caves may be both single caved or double caved. The Khandagiri twin hills were anciently known as Kumara and Kumari parvatas earlier. Prehistoric art is important in understanding the history of the Homo sapiens species and how Homo sapiens have come to have unique abstract thoughts. Some point to these prehistoric paintings as possible examples of creativity, spirituality and sentimental thinking in prehistoric humans.

Caves in Udayagiri:

There are totally 18 caves in Udayagiri named Rani Gumpha” cave of the queen”, Bagaghara Gumpha, Chota Hathi Gumpha, Alakapuri Gumpha, Jayavijaya Gumpha, Panasa Gumpha, Thakuni Gumpha, Patalapuri Gumpha, Mankapuri and swagapuri Gumpha, Ganesha Gumpha, Jambeshwara Gumpha, Vyaghra Gumpha, Sarpa Gumpha, Hati Gumpha, Dhanaghra Gumpha, Haridasa Gumpha, Jagannatha Gumpha and the Rasui Gumpha.

Caves in Khandagiri:

There are totally 10 caves in Khandagiri named, Tatowa Gumpha, Ananta Gumpha, Tentulli Gumpha, Khandagiri Gumpha, Dhyana Gumpha, Navamuni Gumpha, Barabhuji Gumpha, Trusula Gumpha, Ambika Gumpha and the Lalatendu Kechari Gumpha. 

History of the Cave:

The caves were constructed in the First century by king Kharavela of Kalinga. The great Mauryan king Ashoka conquered Kharavela. This stands as a must visit place due to its natural and artificial architectural significance. The fish and meat curry tastes outstanding. Overall they represent one among the historical monuments in the world.

Timing of the place:

The cave opens at 8 AM in the morning and closes at 5 PM in the evening.
