Batu Caves Murugan Temple :

Batu Caves is a famous limestone hill dedicated to Lord Murugan which is 113 years old.Batu Caves is a hill that has a series of caves.This cave temple is situated in Gombak district, 13 kilometers north of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.The cave is one of the most popular hindu shrines abroad which is dedicated to Lord Murugan.Batu caves was promoted as a place of  worship by Mr.K.Thamboosamy Pillai,an Indian trader.He was inspired by the 'Vel' shaped entrance of the main cave and hence decided to dedicate a temple to Lord Murugan.In 1890, Mr.Pillai installed the murti of Lord Murugan which is known as Temple cave.Since 1892,Thaipusam festival is celebrated in the month of Thai(January-February) grandly.

Overview:

The temple cave is 100metre above ground.The Batu cave temple comple consists of three main caves in it and also some smaller ones.Biggest cave is referred as Cathedral Cave.To reach the cave temple one has to climb 272 steps.At the base of hill are two more cave temples called Art gallery cave and Museum cave which is full of Hindu statues and paintings.Many shrines relate the story of Lord Murugan's victory over demon Soorapadman.On the left extreme is Ramayana cave where 50 foot tall statue of Lord Hanuman is found.This cave depicts the story of  Lord Rama.The main attraction of the temple is 140ft high statue of Lord Murugan in front of the main entrance of the cave.This is the tallest statue in the world which attracts million worshipers and tourists.


Festivals:

The grand festival celebrated here is Thaipusam.This have become a pilgrimage site not only for Malaysian Hindus but also from other countries such as India,Australia and Singapore.Thaipusam festival begins with the procession in the morning on Thaipusam day which falls in the month of January-February.The procession begins from Sri Mariamman temple,KualaLumpur leading to Batu caves dedicated to Lord Murugan.Devotees carry containers containing milk as offering to Lord Murugan in huge decorated carriers on shoulders called 'Kavadi'.Some Kavadi's are decorated with flowers and peacock feathers.Even some weigh hundred kilograms.

Bus 11/11d from Bangkok Bank Terminus or bus U6 from Titiwangsa and also by Komuter train using Batu Caves-Port Klang Route from KL Sentral.
