THIRUVASAGAM-THIRUPPORCHUNNAM

The mixture made by grinding different kinds of fragrant things is called as ‘Porchunnam’. It glows like gold.Sometimes, Gold is also added to this mxture. This Porchunnam is used for the Thirumanjanam. When the devotees make this Porchunnam, they sing songs and praise the almighty. This ‘Thirupporchunnam’ is an awesome piece of poetry written for such a situation. In this part, Manikavasagar asks the devotees to enthusiastically grind the materias for making the Porchunnam inorder to please Lord Shiva.

·         VERSE:

முத்துநற் றாமம்பூ மாலைதூக்கி

முளைக்குடந் தூபநற் றீபம் வைம்மீன்

சக்தியுஞ் சோமியும் பார்மகளு

   நாமக ளோடுபல் லாண்டிசைமின்

சித்தியுங் கௌரியும் பார்ப்பதியுங்

   கங்கையும்வந்து கவரிகொண்மி

னத்தனை  யாறனம் மானைப்பாடி

   யாடப்பபொற் சுண்ண மிடித்துநாமே

EXPLANATION:

 Manikavasagar says the devotees to Decorate the holy place with beautiful pearls and flowers; Spread light everywhere, by lighting the lamps. He asks Shakthi, Somi and the God of earth to sing along with Saraswathi, the devotional songs. He calls Sithi, Gowri, Paravthi and Ganga to serve Lord Shiva. He asks all the devotees to sing song, praising the God of Thiruvaiyaaru  and make the holy Porchunnam.

·         VERSE:

மாடு நகைவா நணிலாவெறிப்ப

   வாய்திறந் தம்பவ ளந்துடிப்பப்

பாடுமி னந்தம்மை யாண்டவாறும்

   பணிகொண்ட வண்ணமும் பாடிப்பாடித்

தேடுமி னெம்பெரு மானைத்தேடிச்

   சித்தங் களிப்பத் திகைத்துத்தேறி

யாடுமி னம்பலத் தாடினானுக்

   காடப்பொற்சுண்ண மிதித்து நாமே

EXPLANATION:

In the above phrase, Manikavasagar asks the girls whose teeth and lips look beautiful when they sing, to praise the Lord, about the way he blessed them. He suggests them to sing how Lord Shiva accepted all our service He asks them to search for the eternal truth and get enlightened by the truth. He asks all the devotees to dance and sing for the cosmic dancer and make the Holy Porchunnam for him.

·         VERSE:

வேதமும்வேள்வியு மாயினார்க்கு

   மெய்ம்மையும் பொய்ம்மையு மாயினார்க்குச்

சோதியு மாயிரு ளாயினார்க்குத்

   துன்பமு மாயின்ப மாயினார்க்குப்

பாதியு மாயமுற்று மாயினார்க்குப்

   பந்தமு மாய்வீடு மாயினாருக்

காதியு மந்தமு மாயினாருக்

   காடபபோற் சுண்ண மிடித்துநாமே

EXPLANATION:

“Everything including, the Vedhas, Prayers and offerings, eternal soul, The Universe, Light, darkness, Sadness, Happiness, Shakthi, Shivashakthi, Relationship, Moksham, First and the last thing is nothing but Lord Shiva. Come!Let us Praise him and make the Holy Porchunnam for him!”, says Manikavasagar.

Whatever be the prayers  we do, we should be think of the eternal power, be thankful to him and praise him from the depth of our heart.
