Lord Bhairava Story / History

Once there was a heated conversation between Brahma and Vishnu regarding the superiority of both of them. At that time, Brahma took up the conversation by saying that he is the supreme creator of the universe. He justified the same , by saying that he has five heads, just like Lord Shiva and that, he could do anything which is done by Lord Shiva. Eventually he became egoistic and forged Siva’s work. Then, Shiva  threw off his small nail, which took up the form of Lord Bhairava and cut off the fifth head of Lord Brahma.  The skull of Brahma is held in the hands of Bhairva in the form of Brahma Kalpa and Brahma became enlightened. Lord Shiva is believed to be protecting the Shakthipeetams, in the form of Bhairava. He is known as the safeguarded of the universe.
