Sri Agneeswarar Temple Nagapattinam | Temples of Nagapattinam

Sri Agneeswarar:

Sri Agneeswarar temple is situated in Nalladai, Nagapattinam district. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva along with his consort Parvati named Sundaranayaki. Lord Agneeswarar graces here faces west. The significant feature of the temple is there is a slope like formation around the Shivalinga filled with water to calm down the Agni(heat) of the Lord.The sanctum sanctorum of the temple was built with stones during the rule of Rajaraja Chola II. The other parts of the temple were built by his representative Somanthozhar. The place Nalladai was before known as " Nalladai Mangala Kulothunga Cholapuram in Kurumbur of Jayamkonda Cholanadu".
People of Bharani starrers are advised to visit this temple as they often as they could and worship Lord Agneeswarar. Mother Sundaranayaki graces faces South.

History:

Sage Muruganda Maharishi organized a great Yaga for Lord Agneeswarar. He announced public to contribute the materials for the yaga. People wove three silk clothes with gold and Offered one to the Lord, one to the Rishi and third to their King. The two clothes given to him and Lord were put in the yaga by the Rishi. The public raised the question would the clothes reach the god. The sage asked them to go and check themselves in the sanctum sanctorum. The public were surprised to see the cloth covering the Lord. The sage explained that of the various types of Agni, Bharani Rudragni was one and that power took things they gave to Lord.

Overview:

Apart from the main deity, there are shrines for Dwara Vinayaga, Balamuruga, Selva Vinayaga, Lord Mahavishnu, Somaskandar, Mahalakshmi, Sani Bhagwan, Kailasanathar, Kalyani, Bhuvaneshwari, Chandikeswarar, Veerabadra, Lord Dhakshinamoorthy, Sun god, Bhairava and Mother Durga.

Festivals:

Aipasi annabhishegam, Karthigai Somawar, Margazhi Dunar pooja, Arudra Darashan, Mahasivarathiri, Panguni Uthiram, Thaipoosam are the festivals celebrated here.
