About

Arulmigu Vedagiriswarar Temple located at Thirukalukundram, Chengalpatu district. It is one of the famous Ritual spot where people from other countries visit often. The temple is famous for Lord Shiva known as Deity Vedagiriswarar. It is also called as Kazhugu Or Malai Kovil. The Temple consists of two sides one is for Vedagiriswarar which is located at hill top and another part is located in the foot hill where Thiripura sundari (Parvati) resides. Whereas in down part there seems four towers (gopurams) which resembles the Annamalaiyar Temple.



History / Story of Thirukalukundram Temple

The word Thirukalukundram which means, Thiru (Beautiful, Respectful) Kazhu (Eagle) Kundram (mount). The name Thirukalukundram was named in ancient times by the Priests. This Temple is as one of the 274 Shivalayam which sung by Nayanmars. Pakshi Theertham was named because of Egyptian vultures which rests often where priests feed them every noon with offerings given by Devotees made out of Rice, Wheat, Ragi, Ghee. Two sages Poosha and Vrudha performed penance on Lord Shiva seeking shroopa status. Lord Shiva altered their demand and granted the Sayujya status & then he promised elevation to Sharoopa later. But the sages didn't accept the offer and they were very adamant on their demand. It made Lord Shiva angry and he cursed them to be Eagles.



Specialties

The Temple's specialty is, there are four saints who have sung hymns in their devaram and Thiruvasagam hymns they are Thirugnana sambandhar, Appar, Sundarar, Manicka Vasagar. It is one of the 28th Shiva Temple in Thondainadu region.

Festivals

Festival which host here is Ten days chithirai festival by gathering huge devotees. Ten day festival for Mother Ambika in July and August, full moon days, new moon days, pradosh days. Special poojas are performed during New year, deepavali, pongal. There are 565 steps to reach the Temple. A great festival pushpakara or kumba mela is celebrated once in 12 years. It is note worthy that the tank in temple is one containing herbal properties. It is a experience of a people that a mentally retarded person is cured completely with the dip in the Theertha.


Poojas

Daily at 10’o clock there will be a special pooja by paying a marginal darshan. It is said that four Vedas where prayed to Lord Shiva.

And from 4 pm to 8 pm
