Mundhi Vinayagar Temple History and Specialities

  • The moolavar of the Mundhi Vinayagar temple is Mundhi Vinayaka. The idol of Lord Mundhi Vinayaka/ Lord Ganesha is undoubtedly the largest and biggest in Asia.

  • The idol is sculpted by 21 skilled sculptors from a single stone. The selection of the stone was not an easy task. After many attempts they found a rock from a pit which was 20 feet in depth in a place called Oothukuli near Coimbatore.

  • The sculptors had a mind of penance and were extremely devotional and it took 6 long years to complete the idol.

  • In the appearance of the idol, Lord Mundhi Vinayaka holds the Nectar pot (Amruth Kalasa) in the trunk and is majestically seated on the Maha Padma (Lotus Flower).



Festivals Celebrated in the Temple

  • In this temple, Sankatahara Chaturthi each fortnight is properly and correctly followed.

  • On April 14th, Tamil New Year day – which is also called as Chithirai Kani is very grandly and auspiciously celebrated. On this day, with immense devotion dressing (Alankaras) of the Lord with vegetables and fruits which weights about 5 tonnes is done. These are distributed to the devotees once the performance of puja is completed on the New Year day.

  • Abisheks to Lord Mundhi Vinayaka start at early hours of the day during the Vinayaka Chaturthi day that occurs in August – September. The Lord appears with princely dressing – Raja Alankaram with garlands of flowers which weighs about 3 tonnes. There would be thousands of devotees on this auspicious day.

  • During the months of September – October Navarathri is also grandly celebrated. The beauty of Alankara would be that beautiful in a such a way two eyes wouldn’t be enough. Devotees would be able to see the Lord even from a distance as the construction of the temple is done in such a way.

From Coimbatore Gandhipuram Bus Stand the temple is quite reachable. Devotees can take bus routes 5, 7 and 95A. Buses 04, 02 and 22 are from the Ukkadam bus stand that are available which passes through Tiruchi road.

The temple generally opens at 05.30 AM in the morning and closes at 01.00 PM. And reopens at 04.00 PM and completely closes by 09.00 PM.
