Sri Athmanatha Swami Temple | AvudaiyarKoil Athmanathar Kovil Thiruperunthurai |Aranthangi

Avudaiyarkoil, was formerly known as "Thiruperunthurai" (which means, the largest Harbor), is a Shiva temple situated 14 km from Aranthangi in Pudukkottai District, Tamilnadu. Presiding Deities are Athmanathar and Yogambikai. Anyway, there is no genuine stone portrayal of Lingam or Ambal, and that is the reason this temple is known as the AvudaiyarKoil.

History :

Avudaiyar Temple is closely associated with Saint Manikavasagar. He was born in a brahmin family at Thiruvadhavur on the banks of the Vaigai River. At age of 16, he excelled in all the scripts, arts, and religions. Surprised by his wisdom, the Pandiya King Arimarthanan delegated him as the Chief Minister and awarded him the title 'Thennavan Brahmarayan'.

Having those aside, his considerations were being engaged towards the accomplishment of Mukthi (salvation) and prayed Lord Shiva to show him a Guru. When he reached Perunthurai with gold coins on King's order to buy horses, he saw a Brahmin meditating under a Kurunthu tree. On seeing him, Manikavasagar fell in divinity and continued meditation. Later when he opened his eyes, he couldn't find the person anywhere.

Manikavasagar understood that Guru for him is Lord Siva himself who is in disguise as Brahmin. After getting Siva Gnana from Lord Siva, Manikavasagar spent all his gold on building a temple for him. As Manikavasagar didn't turn up to King with horses, King sent an order to meet him once. Lord Shiva asked him to meet the king and he will come along with horses in AvaniMoolam. As advised, Manikavasagar reached and conveyed the same to King. King waited till a couple of days before the said date and there was no hint about horses, King imprisoned Manikavasagar. But Lord arrived to the Kingdom with horses(turned foxes to horses). But in the dawn, horses turned back to foxes. On seeing this, King punished him by making him to stand in the hot stand. By Lord's grace, the place was flooded with water forming the Vaigai River. To prevent the flood, the king asked the residents to build a dam. An old lady named Vanthi who is selling Pittu, couldn't construct her portion. Lord Shiva asked her to give Pittu and in return, he will build the dam on behalf of her. But he didn't complete the work. On seeing him sleeping without working, King beat Lord Shiva where the whole world got shaken and got the scars. Then the King Realized the person who did all these wonders were none other than Lord Shiva Himself and King asked for forgiveness from Manikavasagar

After this Incident, He dedicated his life to Lord Shiva and composed the popular "Thiruvasagam" in AvudayaurKoil. There is a typical saying that "திà®°ுவாசகத்துக்கு உருகாà®°் à®’à®°ு வாசகத்திà®±்குà®®் உருகாà®°்".

Wonders of Atmanadha :

The King had given lands to the Priests. Yet, in later days a Kurumba Lord Lundakshan captured those by might. He asked Priests to give him the proof for Land that belongs to them and he commented on the land that, "Regardless of whether you burrow to the length of a palm tree, you will not get a drop of water" he said. But a matured Priest approached and hit the earth with a crowbar. In the first stroke itself water spouted out. On seeing this miracle, Lord returned their properties. It is obvious that the matured Priest was none else than Atmanadha
