Interesting facts of Mayuranathar:
Sri Mayuranathar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva in Mayiladuthurai region of Tamil Nadu. It is one of the padal petra sthalam and Lord Shiva here was venerated by Thirugnasambandar, Thirunavukkarasar and Arunagirinathar.
The Presiding God is a swayambhu lingam or a self-showed lingam, the image of the Hindu God Shiva. Shiva's consort (Goddess Parvathi) is known by the names Abhayapradhambigai, Abhayambigai, Anjalnayaki, and Anjali. In the name of this Goddess, Abayambikai Sathagam was revered for Goddess Parvathi by Krishnasami Iyer who is famously addressed as Abayambikai Pattar. There are three more modest sanctuaries to the Hindu God Ganesha and another to Shiva as Nataraja or "God of Dance" One of the sculptures in the temple address Shiva accepting Goddess Parvathi. Here Shiva is named as Mayuranathar as Goddess Parvathi adored him as a peahen (Mayur). In this manner, the temple got its name as Mayuranathaswami Temple.
Sthala Purana :
As per the legend, Daksha, father of Parvathi conducted a yagna yet purposefully neglected Lord Shiva to embarrass Him. Lord Shiva asked Parvathi also not to go to the yagna. Yet, so as to address Her dad to realize his remorse for his mistake, Parvathi went to the yagna however she was embarrassed by Daksha. Lord Shiva ordered the Veerabadra to obliterated the yagna. The Furious Veerabadra destroyed the Yagna and beheaded Daksha and later replaced his head with a Goat head. As She disregarded Lord's suggestion, She was reviled to turn into a peacock.
Afterward, she atones for her mistake and asks for pardoning. So, she worshipped Lord Shiva in the form of Peahen, to overcome the revile. Satisfied by her repentance, Lord Shiva pardoned her by taking Peacock form, danced, and was acquitted. Also believed, Brahma, Lakshmi, Sage Agastya, Manmatha, birds, and creatures revered Mayuranathar. Kuthambai Siddhar, one among the 18 Siddhars attained Jeeva Samadhi here. His idol can be found in front of Dakshinamoorthy. It is believed that Jeeva Samadhi was found under the great Ganesha statue situated adjacent to the compound within the premises.
Mayuranathaswamy Temple was established during the period of Medieval Cholas. Albeit, a few remodels were made in the seventeenth century, the construction hasn't lost its legitimacy. Enormous temple mind-boggling, tall Gopura with lovely carvings and a temple pond catches your eye here.
