Adhi Varaha Perumal Temple, Kumbakonam/ Varaha Perumal
Sthala Purana
Once in Vaikundam, the living place of Lord Narayana, was fortified by two Dwarapalakas named Jayan and Vijayan. Inflicting a curse made them to take birth as Hiranyaksha and Hiranyakashipu in the earth. As Hiranyaksha, he kidnapped the earth and kept it in the underworld. At the point when the devotees implored Vishnu, the Lord appeared as Varaha ( boar ) and went underground. He crushed the Asura and brought back the earth(Bhoodevi). This Varaha Moorthy is the main deity of Adhi Varaha Perumal Temple.
While the Moolavar is in a sitting position, the Utsavar is in a standing position, keeping His left foot on Adhisesha. Goddess is giving darshan as Ambujavalli in a different shrine. Another significant altar is that of Shri Santhanakrishnan in the childhood form.
The pushkarni is known as Varaha Kulam. It is believed that Sage Kashyapar had a holy bath and had a darshan of the Lord here. The Neiveidhyam offered here is made of Korai Kizhangu.
Importance of this Temple
Since this is an exceptionally old temple, the Lords of the other acclaimed temples in Kumbakonam like Chakrapani(https://godsownweb.blogspot.com/2021/05/arulmigu-chakrapani-swamitemple.html) and Sarangapani, visit this temple on the seventh day of Tamil month Chithirai ( Apl-May). Since this temple is much more seasoned than the other Perumal shrines in Kumbakonam, the Lord is called Adhi Varahar. He gives darshan with Mother Lakshmi to His left side lap. As He is accepted to be in marriage present ( Kalyana Kolam), this temple is considered extremely promising for those needing to get married. In any event, for married couples, joint poojas made in this temple, eliminate every one of the mistaken assumptions and guarantee an agreeable life. The individuals who are confronting land debates offer supplications in this temple on Tuesdays. Those who are experiencing the evil impacts of Rahu and Ketu, light Deepams in this temple for alleviation.
Holy Salagrama with emerged Sangu and Chakra Image is placed before the moolavar and poojas were performed to it.
This is accepted to be in existence even before the holocaust ( Pralayam ) and that could be another reason for calling this Perumal as Adhi Varahan. Indeed, even the Mahamagam celebration is accepted to have begun after the Pralayam. During the Maha Magam celebration of Kumbakonam which is celebrated once in 12 years, the Lords of all the Perumal temples in Kumbakonam, including this Adhivarahar, visit Cauvery for Theerthavari.
