Sthala Purana/ Story of The Temple:
It is accepted that Lord Mahavishnu and Goddess Mahalakshmi revered Lord Shiva here. Hence the God gets the name Sri Lakshmipureeswarar. Since Goddess Mahalakshmi worshipped Lord Shiva here, it gets the name Thiru Nintra Oor.
After beheading his Mother, Parasuram, an avatar of Lord Vishnu, revered Lord Shiva in this temple to overcome the revile.
History
Another history is that a Chola King would pass this town consistently on his way to the Chidambaram temple. One day when he was crossing this spot, the lights took by his men naturally disappeared. In spite of their earnest attempts, they couldn't light it once more. Yet, when they crossed this spot, the lights lit up naturally. This became a routine. To know the reason, he asked a shepherd about anything unusual that happened in this place. The shepherd said to the ruler that there was a Shivalingam close by and a cow performed abhishekam on that lingam. The ruler then requested his men to look through the spot and soon a lingam was uncovered. The ruler saw that the lingam was bleeding as a result of being hit with an iron bar while digging. Understanding the sin, the King implored Lord Shiva requesting absolution. He also chose to construct a temple there. As the wick of the lights ("Thiri" in Tamil) got smothered here, this spot came to be known as "Thiri Nintravur". This has now changed to Thirunintriyur. The scar on the Shivalingam can be seen even at this point.
It is also accepted that Lord Indra, Iravadham(a Chola ruler), and Sages Agasthiyar, Jamadhagni, and Parasuramar have revered the Lord of this temple.
