Sri Nethrarpaneswarar Temple Thiruveezhimizhalai | Lord Shiva Temple In Thiruveezhimizhalai

Sri Nethrarpaneswarar Temple:

The Managing Deities are Sri Nethrarpaneswarar, Sri Veezhi Azhakeesar, Sri Veezhinathaswamy, Sri Kalyanasundaramurthy and Goddess Sri Sundarakujambigai, Sri Azhagiyavanmulaiammai, Sri Karthiyayani. The temple is adorned with Theertham as Vishnu Theertham and tree as Veezhi tree.

This is one of the 276 Devara Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalams and 61 Shiva Sthalam on the Southern bank of the stream Cauveri in Chozha Nadu (Thenkarai).

Legend:

Sage Kathyayana and his wife Sumangalai had performed thorough atonement here to get a child. Satisfied with their compensation, Goddess Parvathi herself was born to them and named "Karthyayini".When she attained the age of marriage, the sage asked Lord Shiva to show him a groom. Reacting to his supplications, Lord Shiva showed up and revealed to him that he would wed his girl on the "Magam" star day in the Tamil month of Chithirai (April-May) and said that her daughter is none other than Goddess Parvathy herself. As told by Lord Shiva, their wedding occurred here. The sanctum takes after a "Kalyana Mandapam" (marriage lobby) with two columns – one is supposed to be "Arasanikkal" and the other "Panthakkal". This type of sanctum can't be seen elsewhere.

The Lord is known as Sri Kalyanasundarar and is informally called "Mappillai Swamy" ("Mappillai" signifies groom in Tamil).

Another legend is that Lord Mahavishnu was honored with his "Plate" (Chakrayudam) after venerating Lord Shiva here. It is accepted that in his fight against Sage Thatheesi, Lord Mahavishnu had utilized his plate. When the disk contacted the wise's body, it lost its sharpness and became dead. Stressed, Lord Mahavishnu talked with the Devas who exhorted him that Lord Shiva had the "Sudharsana Chakram" (disk) which he had made to obliterate devil Chalandaran. Lord Mahavishnu resulted in this place (Thiruveezhimizhalai) conveying a sanctum tower ("Vinnizhi Vimanam") with him. He put the icon of Lord Shiva inside it and loved him consistently by making a contribution of 1,000 lotus blossoms.

To test Lord Vishnu's assurance, Lord Shiva caused the lack of one blossom. To compensate for this deficiency, Lord Vishnu quickly culled out one of his eyes out and offered it alongside the blossoms. Satisfied by his commitment, Lord Shiva reestablished Lord Mahavishnu's eye and favored him with the "Sudharsana Chakram". Lord Shiva also named Lord Mahavishnu "Kamalakkannan" ("Kamalam" signifies lotus in Tamil).

In his song, Saint Thirunavukkarasar referenced Lord Mahavishnu's love and the manner in which he offered his eye to the master. Holy person Thirugnanasambanthar likewise referenced in his psalm about Lord Mahavishnu's love and the sanctum tower that he put here.
