Pradosham is the time that occurs between one and half an hour before and after the sun sets (One muhurtham). Pradosham is a mix of the words pra and dosham, where Pra refers to the removal and Dosham refers to sins, which together refers to the time when sins are removed.
This Muhurtham occurs every
day, but the Pradosham hour on the day of the Krishnapaksha triodasi(that falls
on a dark fortnight or triodasi before Amavasya), is particularly auspicious.
If the Pradosham falls on a Saturday, it is known as Shani Pradosham, which is
even more fortunate, and this time is extremely important in Shaivite
tradition.
What is Pradosha Pooja?
Pooja performed early in the
morning is considered auspicious in general. However, in temples dedicated to
God Shiva, poojas or darshans performed in the evenings are just as important
as those performed in the morning. Pradosha darshan holds a particular place
among Shiva temple poojas. Abhishekams are performed to Great God Shiva and
Nandi one at a time during this period. Later, the Utsava vigrahas processions
surrounding the shrine continue.
Story of Pradosham
Dhevas and Asuras once
attempted to obtain Amrutham (nector) from the Kseerabthi by employing the
serpent Vasuki and the hill Mandhara (milk ocean). Then came the horrible toxin
Halahalam. Everyone became terrified and cried out to Lord Shiva for help. Lord
Shiva, the pinnacle of mercy, ate the poison. Then as per His command, they
resumed their search for Amrutham. It was obtained on Dhwadhasi (twelfth moon
day). Devas began dancing and enjoying their victory without praying or
thanking the God who provided them with Amrutham.
They realized their sin of
not praying to God on thrayodhasi (the thirteenth moon day) and prayed for
forgiveness. Lord Shiva, pleased and gracious, forgives them and danced between
the Nandhi's horns (holy bull). Pradhosham is the name given to that period.
Those who pray to Lord Shiva at that time would have their requests granted and
will be granted mukthi.
Benefits of Pradosha Pooja
According to the karanagama,
worshipping God Shiva together with God Nandi during the pradosha period or
pradosha pooja will reap enormous rewards. It is thought to alleviate their
illnesses, mental imbalances, and death anxieties.
It is also thought that
the gods' generosity will pull believers out of poverty while simultaneously
fulfilling all of their requests.

Pradosh Vrat Rituals and Pooja
· The
twilight hour - the time just before sunrise and sunset - is considered
fortunate on the day of Pradosham. During this period, all prayers and pujas
are performed.
· Devotees
bathe and prepare for the puja one hour before sunset.
· Lord
Shiva, Goddess Parvati, Lord Ganesh, Lord Kartik, and Nandi are all worshipped
at the preliminary puja. After that, Lord Shiva is worshipped and invoked in a
sacred pot known as the 'Kalasha.' This Kalasha is filled with water and
maintained on darbha grass with a lotus drawn on it.
The majority of worshippers go to Lord Shiva temples for darshan after the puja. On the day of Pradosham, it is said that even lighting a single lamp is immensely rewarding.
· Devotees can easily please Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati and seek their blessings by performing these simple rituals with absolute sincerity and purity.
