The most sacred and the largest shrine of the Temple City - Bhubaneswar is the Lingaraja temple. The temple is completely devoted to Lord Harihara, it is dedicated to Lord Vishnu (Hari) and Lord Shiva (Hara). The Lingaraja temple was built in the 11th century, this place has a self-manifested (Swayambhu) Shivalinga, which is around 8 inches height and 8 feet in diameter. The Lingaraja temple has a wonderful architecture and is the top-most attraction in the whole city for the tourists, the temple allows only hindu devotees. The platform outside the complex is for the non-hindus to explore the magnificent ancient structure.
History of the Temple:
The Lingaraj Temple in Bhubaneswar has a rich history dating back to the 11th century, believed to have been built by King Jajati Keshari. However, worship of the Swayambhu Shivling within the temple may date back to the 7th century. The temple is mentioned in the Brahma Purana, symbolising the convergence of Shaivism and Vaishnavism. Annual festivals like Mahashivaratri, Ashokastami, and Chandan Yatra are celebrated with great fervour. Mahashivaratri sees thousands of devotees making offerings to Lord Shiva, with fasting and illumination ceremonies. Chandan Yatra is a 21-day festival where deities are taken to Bindu Sarovar for a procession and sanctification with sandalwood paste. Ashokashtami, the Rath Yatra of Lord Lingaraj, is celebrated with enthusiasm, where the deity's idol is taken to Rameswar Temple and back, attracting large numbers of devotees.

At Lingaraj Temple in Bhubaneswar, apart from offering prayers and admiring its architecture, visitors can explore nearby religious attractions like Bindu Sarovar, a focal point during Chandan Yatra. Ekamra Van, a garden on its banks, showcases medicinal plants linked to Hindu deities. Nearby temples such as Mukteswara, Rajarani, Ananta Vasudeva, Brahmeswara, and Parasurameswara are renowned for their architecture and religious significance. Other attractions in the city include the Odisha State Museum, Odisha Craft Museum, Udayagiri and Khandagiri Caves, and Dhauligiri Shanti Stupa.
Considerations for Visiting Lingaraja Temple:
Non-Hindus are not permitted entry into the temple.
A platform is provided for non-Hindus to view the temple exterior.
Electronic devices, including cameras, are prohibited within the temple premises.
Parking facilities are available outside the temple premises.
Shoes must be removed before entering the main temple area.
It is recommended to refrain from accepting 'Puja' services from strangers; instead, consult the temple priests for any religious rituals or offerings.
