Kandhaswamy Temple Founders
Kandhaswamy temple was founded by two friends Velur Mari Chettiar and Kandappa Achari. Based on the legend, when the dual friends were on their pilgrimage to worship Tiriporur Lord Murugan it's about fifty six kilometers away situated on the Old Mahabalipuram Road when they had discovered the statue of lord Kandasami and brought to Chennai. On an auspicious day in the year 1673 they installed the deity in a temple. Muthiyalu provided the place required to built this beautiful temple on that year.

Ramalinga adigal when migrated from Chidhambaram to Chennai followed by his father's death spent most of his times in this Kandhswamy temple. The first reward to Ramlingaa adigal came in the form of Lord Muruga and the saint explained “The beauty endowed divine faces six, the illustrious shoulders twelve”. Ramalingam spent most of his time in his room and continued his spritual journey. Infront of a a mirror, he used to do meditation and composing poems. Followed by his meditation his individual self had disappeared and the God he realized within himself appeared as reflection on the mirror.
