Sankara hara chathurthi:

About the Event: 

The Sankara hara chathurthi is very special day for Lord Ganesha.
Sankara hara chathurthi was celebrated every month fourth day after the Pournami(Full moon day).

SANKATA means Problems, Hara means removing, Chathurthi means the moon day to worship Lord Ganesha.

About Lord Ganesha:

According to traditional stories, the Lord vinayagar was created by Goddess Parvathi devi (wife of Lord Shiva).

Parvathi devi create Lord Vinayagar from sandal wood and perfumed oils. Once parvathi devi while in bathing, she ordered her son lord Vinayagar to secure as protecting guard by standing outside.

Some devans like naradhar, Saptharishi asked her son to talk with Goddess Parvathi devi, Lord Ganesh not allowed any one to enter since, his mother was in bath. And he fighted with all devans including naradhar and saptharishi. All of them defeated by Lord Ganesh.

This matter was becomes serious and taken in to consideration of Lord Shiva(Head of all gods and also Father of Lord Ganesh). 

He doesn't know that the Ganesh was his child created by Goddess parvathi. Lord shiva taken a battle with Ganesh and Finally removes ganesh's head. 

After this matter came to the knowledge of Parvathy devi, she got angry about the son's death and planned to destroy total world. Then Lord Shiva promised to Parvathi devi that he will make Lord vinayaga to become alive again. This is the reason for that lord Ganesh has Elephant head.

Then, the Ganesh born date was considered as "Vinayagar chathrithi".
