Samayapuram Mariamman:

Samayapuram Mariamman is a well known goddess for her power. Samayapuram Mariamman goddess is also called as 'Samayapurathal'.This temple is situated at Samayapuram in Trichy district.The moolavar of the temple is Mariamman.The sthala vruksha of the temple is Neem.This temple is said to be 2000 years old.The historical name is Kannapuram.The Samayapuram Mariyamman temple is one of the renowned Shakthi shrines of Tamilnadu.The popular saying about this temple goes like this,"Samayapurathal will protect her devotees in times of need"( Samayapuram Mariyamman samyathil kaappal in tamil).


Overview:

The main deity Samayapuram Mariamman is made of sand and clay.Hence no abhisheka is offered to the main deity but instead to the small stone statue placed in front of the main deity.The history of the temple is unclear.From the entrance of the temple itself one can see the main deity.This appears as if she is waiting for the devotees coming to her.The main significant feature of the temple is that those suffering from measels for a long thime,come here and stay untill they get cured.Also light Maavilaku(a lamp made of flour and jaggery paste with ghee).Many devotees visit this temple from Karnataka as the main deity Mariamman resembles Chamundeshwari of Mysore.Main offering made by the majority of the women are Mangal Sutra in the hundi of the temple.Also another significance about the temple is Mariamman undergoes a fast for the welfare of the mankind for twenty eight days from the last sunday of tamil month Maasi(February - March).During the fast,no cooked foods are placed for nivedhana.Only flour,orange,grapes and tender coconut are offered to Mother Mariamman.To complete the fast an abhisheka is offered to Mother only with flowers which is called as Poochoridhal festival.After Palani, Samayapuram Mariamman temple is second most wealthy temple in terms of cash flow in Tamilnadu.Samayapuram is a significant symbol of the native culture in rural Tamilnadu.

Festivals:

Thai poosam in the month of Thai(January - February) is celebrated grandly.Also temple's car festival and Theppam Thiruvizha(Lake procession) takes place in the month of April.All Tuesdays and Fridays in Aadi month(July - August) are celebrated in grand.Moreover,most of the days the temple drew a large number of devotees due to Mother Mariamman's power.The legacy of the temple is well known beyond Tamilnadu.Many people in Srilanka,Singapore,Malaysia,Fiji and Southafrica show their loyalties to the temple and try to create a similar temple in their country.Samyapuram Mariamman shrine in Malaysia,Shrine of Mariamman at Sri Veeramuthu Muneeswarar temple at Singapore are some of the examples for their legacies.In the month of Aadi ,Annual Kozh Valarpu festival is celebrated in Sri Samayapuram Mariamman temple pillaigal at Jurong west,Singapore.
